So I'm currently a Vodacom Talk 200s contract user via Autopage for my personal use. Over the last 6 years that I have had my contract I've spent in excess of R 47k on calls and data etc. I've been due for an upgrade since May of this year and yet I have not been able to find a phone that I like and I continue to use my SE W850i. I would really appreciate some advice on what I should do:

Option 1 would be to just continue using my phone until I find something I like someday.
Option 2 would be to just upgrade to the best phone I can without a pay in.
Option 3 would be to take a junk phone with the biggest voucher I can get with it.
Option 4 would be to see who would offer me the best deal as a new subscriber, cancel my current contract and move over.

At this stage I'm not really all that phased about what phone I get, my current one does everything I actually need. As long as the phone can run opera mini its perfect for me. A QWERTY keypad would be nice though.

I would go some for sort of upgrade... Networks make a killing from people who don't upgrade since their costs includes a hardware fee

In all honestly, I have used the latest Nokias, SE's, and I currently have a BlackBerry and nothing has even come close to the iPhone that I had. It is by far the most fun and useful phone I have used.

I would say go for option 4.

See what they can offer in terms of iPhones. The iPhone 3GS is difficult to come by due to major stock limitations but the normal iPhone 3G compares very well, especially if you do not need to pay in.

What I would love is a contract where I wasn't subsidising the hardware...unfortunately almost everyone I have looked at so far has the exact same price for my contract with tons of other free stuff to get you to sign.

I couldnt agree more! I got my iPhone 3g on launch (in Sa) and its by FAR the best phone I've had. I had the tytn ii before that and the nokia e61i before that.

Get the iPhone!
Do it!
Do it NOW!

Wait a sec folks... We haven't even asked what the guy needs the phone for, so: What do you need the phone for? Is it purely phone & SMS? How important is data? And email?

I had a QWERTY on my S710 and initially missed it when I upgraded to a Diamond 2 but after a couple of days of using the T9 on the Diamond I found it to be very usable. Much faster phone, great internet connection and lots of WinMo apps to keep busy with. Would get it above an iPhone anyday.

The phone will mostly purely be used for phone and sms, the only time I actually use data is when I am travelling at which stage I log into the companies web based email to check up on some things via Opera.

If you logon to the email you could probably just configure your phone's email function to do that for you - will make it quite a bit easier.

Since you're not really looking to "play" on your phone I'd say go for one of the low-end HTC's (snap) - you could probably pick it up at game/makro with a decent voucher. Or even a Nokia E65.
