Hi there,

Sorry if this question has been asked before but I am having problems with my external hard drive and my iMac. I have a 2TB external drive plugged into my iMac and on there I have all my movies which iTunes reads from. For the last two weeks I have been copying new files and deleting files from the external without any trouble. When I got home today I tried to copy new files to the external drive but it won't allow me. When I view the drive info I see the only permission I have is to read? Any idea what could have caused this? It worked perfectly yesterday and the iMac was off the whole day so nothing has changed. the drives were originally formated to NTFS on a windows machine but as I said i have been adding and removing files to the external drive without any problems at all.

Please could someone help me out.

NTFS support on osx is sketchy at best. I'm not sure if you can even fix disk permissions using disk utility.

If it was me, I'd get everything off that drive and reformat it.

Download/purchase 'Paragon NTFS for Mac'. Works absolutely fantastic! Always used a work around before but problem was that if you didn't safely remove the drive i.e. just pull it out, then the drive would give the symptoms you are having and the only fix I found was to reformat the drive. Granted that was 4 years ago so I'm sure things have moved on!

Anyways, that day I downloaded a cracked version of Paragon NTFS for Mac and it worked brilliantly. Used it for 5 months before finally buying it as it was definitely worth the $29.95 at the time in 2008. If you purchase that, you'll never have any NTFS hassles in Mac!

Latest version I have is 9 and it supports OS 10.7 (Lion)

Thanks for the replies. I am just not too sure what happend as it has been working flawlessly for almost three weeks now since i plugged it into the iMac and has stayed plug in all the time. Was able to transfer data too and from the external drive without any problems last night and when I tried this evening I cant. What could cause this to all of a sudden happen?

Thank IceDreama - downloaded Paragon NTFS and it works like a dream, can read and write to the external drive again. Honestly dont know what happened that prevented me all of a sudden from writing to the drive but its all sorted now. Thanks again for all the help.

Paragon is definitely the best NTFS driver out there... However I'd still recommend you consider bwana's advice to reformat as a native Mac drive to benefit from performance and remove need to defragment.
