I knew it was going to be expensive, but I thought I'd give my local store a ring anyway and enquire about the price to upgrade her RAM.

:wtf:

... and that comes after trying to get hold of them for two days. They didn't respond to an email query, nor a telephone message.

So, what are the options? Where to get, and what to do (and what, dare I ask, is the effect on the warranty)?

What type of RAM is currently fitted? Do you have spare RAM slots? Make sure the spec is the same, but that is obvious.

Just buy some more of the same. Esquire support MyBB members so buy it from them. Re the warranty you will have to read that yourself.

Thanks for info.

Store tells me warranty will be voided if I buy and fit the RAM myself. Apple (International) Support seems to think otherwise ... as does the instructions provided with the iMac ... t y p i c a l.

What a load of rubbish. The iMac manual probably tells you where and how to upgrade the ram. At least they use to do so. The type of ram depends on the machine you have. If you have a core 2 duo it will use either DDR 2 800 MHz or DDR 3 1066 MHz . If its a core isomething then it will use DDR 3 Ram. You are safe with using DDR 3 1333MHz Ram in all. If you go to apple menu, about this Mac and then go to system profiler it will actually tell you the Ram that is currently in your machine. Just get the same type and speed. I have found that just about any make and brand will work. Even stuff like Kingston value ram works well.

I upgraded my iMac memory at my local Matrix Warehouse. They did the install, and doubled the memory. It was really cheap, a few hundred rands, and no install charge.

^ This. Posted the direct quote from my old MBP's user manual on MyBB a little while ago and your warranty is definitely not voided (can't find the post 'tho). I was running 1333 DDR3 Transcend Ram in a machine that came stock with 1066... just get throttled back to 1066 but never had an issue... ever.

Thanks very much for your help. Yep: the user manual does tell you how to do it yourself.

I don't quite get the oh-we-are-so-special-because-we-work-at-a-Mac-store vibe with the Apple shops.

Upgraded my iMac from 4Gb to 12 using OWC chips. Never looked back. It is the one internal upgrade you can do on an iMac without any trouble (i.e without removing the screen with vacuum clamps ... scary). Just make sure you really push those chips home.
