Does anyone know of a good open source image editor? I just hate Adobe's software, so it would be great if someone can recommend an alternative.

Also, if there are any free video editing software out there, can someone please point me to it.

Thanks,

GBM :cool:

Not sure if this will fall into your category of "image editing", but it is "free".
It's pretty good for photo's ;)
Picasa

OK I downloaded GIMP, but can't figure out how to edit the image to black and white. (Sorry I suck with this kinda stuff). :rolleyes:

Can Photofilter and Picasa turn images grey? (B&W)

I wouldn't bother with The GIMP. It's freaking powerful but it has the worst UI I've ever used.. so if you /really/ want to invest that much time to come to grips with it's sub-par UI, go for it :)

Try Paint.net - You need Microsoft .NET Framework installed, or get the larger build with it included.. It's not as powerful as Gimp or Photoshop, but it is very fast and has a good UI to boot.

Video editing software..hmms.. depends what sort of editing? I'd have to look in detail for you.

Virtualdub (google it) is free and is very powerful but it doesn't offer timeline editing, I've only really used Adobe Premier for footage editing, but I've mainly used Virtualdub for filtering, cleaning up and splicing frames etc;
