Just been emailed the pricing from Imaginet for their new Pricing

ADSL Freestyle
Use as much traffic as you like and only pay for what you use. No contracts, no commitments, and no complications. Imaginet's Freestyle ADSL is the most flexible ADSL service available in South Africa. Freestyle ADSL operates similar to a cellphone contract. You purchase a base amount of traffic (megabytes) that suits your needs best, but you're not limited to the base. If you use more than the base, you are only billed for the amount of extra traffic you use in increments of 100mb.

Yeah well...

Kinda destroys the whole fixed rate for broadband, hell I could have no cap now if I wanted, just buy new accounts every time I hit 3 or 30 gigs whichever account it may be.

Also clever working in 100mb instead of GB prices, R60-67.5 excl vat so... R68.40 - R 76.95 (if my math is correct) per gigabyte.

It's like dial-up in reverse, you may for your minutes, with pay per 100mb or gig, whichever its pay per amount you download.

It good to see that you guys offer a complete pay as you use, however you over use factor is high at 6.75 per 100 mb. However, Well done !, its good to see some ISP move in the right direction, please pm me how to get hold of you guys ?
 
so you're selling gigs at R67.50 excluding VAT?

SAOL is still cheaper. beat their prices and your customer base will be huge!
 
If you guys don't have a minimum for the Unshaped .. I'd buy a couple of the 100MB increments .. but I don't want to use the initial 2Gb ... its very much like telkom's 499 for 4GB

I am just a subscriber, try http://www.imaginet.co.za/contact.asp
they are very responsive to your emails, get results quicker from a small ISP than those useless "HELPDESK" ISP's.

We have a nice representation of smaller ISP's who give prompt, effecient service, certainly beats those "You are No 50 in the queue and you're call will be answered by the next available operator in 30 minutes time" Oh boy !!

Someone with time should do a analysis of the new ADSL pricing structure.
No cap sounds very misleading Darren I would re-word that.

Imagine the billing required to manage each user, time for a new stats program.

I have looked at SAOL packages and dont see anything special ? am I maybe missing something
 
SAOL pricing after Nov 1 ...

For existing users R299 for 30Gigs, and for new users R350 for 10Gigs .

What makes it special is that the SAIX wholesale cost price ex. VAT for the above packages will be R1620 and R 540 respectively.

Thats a loss of R 1357.72 and R 232.98 per month for each user on the respective packages (assuming they use up their allocated cap).

They say the synergy of their large base will cover the additional cost (i.e. those users not using up their caps will subsidise those who do use theirs up)

If they're telling the truth ... they got very big balls.
 
However is you are a client of theirs and it goes wrong your stuffed !
 
Sounds fair enough to me. With the current subscriber base, there will be no such thing as all-you-can-eat bandwidth at a fixed cost anytime soon. The price for the extra gig is however quite high compared to other countries, but at least they charge in 100mb increments and not per started gig. So I might actually think about this one. Let's see what the other providers do.

Actually, on the high-end package, the rate is R60 per gig, which is a damn tight profit margin when you consider that our cost is R54 per gig (no secret, right?).

We haven't stopped working on alternatives, but we couldn't wait any longer to inform our customers. We're determined not to make our customers suffer over this whole Telkom debacle.

Thanks for the kind words, Kilos. We do our best to take care of our customers.

As for the "no cap" being misleading, that's obviously not our intention, and there really is no cap on those accounts, because they will keep working regardless of how much traffic is used. But I am open to suggestions on how to say it in a way that isn't perceived as misleading. Do you have any ideas for me?

As for the billing, we've been working on a custom billing program for months now, and it will handle the usage-based stuff automatically. No real effort for us. We would have liked a bit more time for development (the system's in beta atm), but it will be ready, and soon our customers will be able to self-manage their own accounts.
 
With everybody scrambling to find the cheapest ISP we sometimes seem to forget that it's not just about price. I've had nothing but good service from Imaginet these last few years. Their prices have always been competitive and I am sure they are forever fighting Telkom for better deals.

I am also sure that most of these ISPs are not out to screw us for our last buck. Instead of us focussing our attention on Telkom, we are now pressuring the ISPs to make up for what Telkom is denying us.

hey everyone

i was trying to figure out the cost implications for isp's. darren m reckons their cost is 54 a gig, and they're charging 60 odd for it. that's not to say that the extra they charge is all profit!

an average adsl user will check mail about 6 times an hour. even if they have no mail, its still a lot of bandwidth between saix and imaginet. they also have to provide support (most people do need technical help - i couldn't set up my modem without the great help i got from imaginet). they also have to bill customers - remember a debit order costs more than R2 per transaction!

there's also overheads and business related costs involved too. isp's are not making a lot of money on this deal.

what i reckon we should be doing is attacking t*lkom - they are the ones making the biggest profit! telkom is raping us on the line charge, raping us on bandwidth (that's shaped poorly on top of all that), and still raping the isp as well! isps have to pay for local bandwidth, lines, and the traffic on adsl? no wonder they've made billions of profit!

i reckon isp's like imaginet are hero's; they bust their chops to keep people like me happy - i've enjoyed their service and i'm sticking with it, because the price rubbish is t*lkom's problem, not the isp's.

at least we're not getting chopped for gigs we're not using!

lets leave the isp's guys, support the ones wiht the best service, and lets' show t*lkom the middle finger (extended).

I also like Imaginet and would like not to move somewhere else whilst their pricing are not too far out of kilter. I like 5 gbyte freestyle option, but would like to place an artificial cap on myself, which I can then extend via your website, ie my interaction is necessary, to ensure that I do not break the bank. Fool's law will have it that when I get stuck by a worm or something else, that that will be the only time that my ADSL will perform at its best
