Would you rather pay for an entire extra gigabyte when you've only used an extra 100mb?

I know... you'd rather have uncapped ADSL. So would I.
 
Is there ANY way you can offer the unshaped 100MB starting at 100Mb ... without having to buy the initial package ?

I wouldn't even mind having a once-off signup fee.

Not yet, but in the future, yes. Telkom have only offered a few hard-capped packages for resale, and only one (4gb) unshaped.

I've been working on SAIX to give us better network controls so we can do things like you suggest. To do this, we'll need (nearly) real-time traffic info from their servers, as well as the ability to reset ADSL ports at will, rather than waiting for the 12 or 24 hours to expire. I've been promised by the SAIX network manager that they're finally working to provide us with this functionality (after I pestered him for months).

I've got a few other things in the works as well, but it's too early to talk about them yet. I'll let you know as soon as possible.

Er...? OK, wait, I think I almost understand this one. So, a person who uses Kazaa uses up all the country's available bandwidth and no-one can get their mail!! Yes!

OK, correct me if I'm mistaken - and forgive me for preaching to the converted - but surely the connection package you have inherently regulates the amount of bandwidth you use? I'm on 192k HomeDSL: so I get a maximum of 32k/s, irrespective of whether I use Kazaa or HTTP! While I understand the basis of their stupidly formulated argument - that someone who uses Kazaa doesn't actually have to be present at his machine to use it and can therefore just leave it running at full 32k/s capacity - the actual cap on the connection should then trap and alleviate this problem!

Not at this point, B. To be completely honest, it would cost us more to debit your bank account than we would make on 100mb. We are looking at a few other packages, though. If you want to be notified about new developments, just send an email to [email protected] and ask to be added to the mailing list for ADSL.
 
Well i could do bank transfers .... but not to worry ... I'm just hunting for the best Skype/WoW solution and basically investigating every possibility.

Ah, thanks again. Yeah. I figured you guys would have to have almost up-to-the-byte real-time information on utilisation to manage hard-capping. Seems pretty useless if you give someone a capped contract and they churn out 10Gigs in their last 12 hours. Which YOU as the ISP are liable for to SAIX, but the customer isn't liable for because he has a hard-capped package.

I have a concern about per-gig billing. What would happen if a virus outbreak increases utilisation on my line? I have taken all the necessary precautions on my side, including a firewall and anti-virus software on my PC. I access the internet through a MicroCom router that does not, as far as I know, have its own firewall. This means that my router is visible from the internet, even though the NAT probably prevents anything from coming through it. As I understand it, this then also means that unsolicited traffic originating from the internet can reach my router, even though it doesn't come through it, using my bandwidth to do so. What happens if I suffer a Denial of Service attack on my line?

What protection do I have, as a consumer, against being billed for this kind of utilisation?

This is another point I've raised with Telkom. Their response is basically, if something like this happens, the customer needs to report it to the ISP and the ISP must escalate it to SAIX as a "network fault". They can see if it's an attack and, if so, the bare minimum you'll get is a credit for an estimate of the wasted bandwidth. It's far from a perfect solution, but it's something, and it's all Telkom are prepared to do.

As for gigs carrying over from month to month, I'm afraid not. Best thing I can recommend is getting a package with a base traffic allowance that's closest to your actual usage.

Quick question on this subject... do you think we should offer a 1gb base unshaped package?
 
How about a "local only" account. Should be nice and cheap if you take out all that insanely expensive international bandwidth.

LOL. It's amazing how often you see "ration" instead of "ratio". I've seen it on numerous forums and even reviews, on websites from all over the world. I've even made the mistake myself a few times! :eek: :p

YES YES YES!!

Especially in light of losing my remaining bandwidth at the end of the month. My utilisation on an average month is probably only 1.5Gb, so this would suit me beautifully.

I'm a little dissapointed with Imaginet, I signed up with them in August because I thought they would have very competitive prices come November.

Firstly I don't understand why the 3GB hard cap has to be more than the 3000 Freestyle. I dont want to risk going over my cap and running up a huge bill because I left something running by mistake. This is the reason I got ADSL so the price would stay the same.

Secondly Imaginet's 3GB hard-cap is R250.8 (Inc vat), which is even more expensive than TelkomSA's prices (and as far as I know they aren't hard-capping). Other ISP's have prices ranging from R199 for 3GB(hard-cap) to R299 for 5GB(hard-cap).

I like Imaginet and perhaps they just need some time adjust their prices so I won't be changing ISP's untill the end of December. In the mean time ill just get the 3GB hard cap and hope for the best.

Ermmm...let's think about this. You're disappointed with Imaginet.....Wow!! That's great to know! The backbone they setup really is FAR too expensive. Seen that they bought access into the last mile, (after the government so swiftly unbundled it), you should have no reason to blame it on SAIX! They're not SAIX resellers, they built their very own backbone, and are totally in control of the prices they charge. They also make a HUGGGEE profit!! It's crazy!

All I'm saying is that compared to other resellers their prices aren't the best, If other SAIX ISP's can offer it at that price why can't Imaginet?

I'm just trying to make the best of a bad situation, at the moment the only people willing to negotiate with customers are the ISP's and thats why I'm going to stay with Imaginet to see if their prices change a bit.

Don't worry, I've done my part with all the e-mails to ICASA and Telkom.
