iMate JasJar MTN Offering??

Jam

Yeah, I just got one of the those Jam's. They're great, except for one thing - they run Windows. Now I have my phone crashing regularly. I find myself having to visit the task manager to kill programs and get all sorts of funny error messages.

So far I'm not majorly impressed with the Jasjar.

The following are some of my gripes (which hopefully can be resolved):
  • Cannot sign into pocket MSN (error: "temporary conditions prevents you from connecting to pocket MSN service")
  • Cannot play chess on gameknot.com (error: Java virtual machine is not enabled or not installed)
  • Cannot add contacts to Skype (this is strange...?)
  • Cannot use jasjar modem to dial out with my laptop
  • Cannot synch with my Outlook 2000 (Need to upgrade to 2002, but am concerned that the upgrade will mess up my contacts or jeopardise my work connection?)

And my biggest gripe: The device gets frustratingly unresponsive at times. (I already had to perform 1 soft reset).
There must be some law (similar to Moore's law) that states: "the more sophisticated technology becomes, the more unstable it gets"

Mams, maybe you can help me with some of these.

Thanks

Im online now using the JasJar as a modem for my PC...
go to programs on the JasJar itself, then choose the Modem link.press start, then connect your JasJar to your PC via USB.
The Pc will say found new hardware.choose automatic install>not search internet. It will install HTC USB modem. Then make a connection on your PC using this modem with dialling no as: *99#...pronto>you ONLINE at 3g speeds ( or in my sad Krugersdorp case >GPRS)

Its seems I'm not the only one, check out...

they solved it by changing their regional settings to (english) UK, although this doesnt work for me. I've tried SA, US, UK, NZ...still no luck

Mams, what is your regional setting?

Morningside MTN service Centre or I quote snoopdog:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went to the Sandton City one on Saturday, and they have 10 of the K-Jam and 5 of the Jasjar, so phone then and place your orders ASAP, I've already booked my K-Jam. There number is 784 6092.

BOTH OF ABOVE PLACES will cost you: R1700 on a procall 120

drat .. then ill have to wait until im back in jhb ... grumble growl moan biatch

I have sorted out most of my problems with the jasjar:
-Can now sign in to pocket MSN (had to change my regional settings to NZ then to UK and could then sign in. dont know why this worked?)
-Skype contacts/sign-in sorted (by closing all apps to free up memory)
-Sync with Outlook 2000 (upgraded from ActiveSync 4.0 to 4.1)
-Unresponsiveness sorted (by regularly closing applications in memory; since hitting the (x) button does not close applications)

Only outstanding issue is using the jasjar modem to dial out with my laptop. I followed Mams instructions, but get the error :"Connection attempt failed because your computer and the remote computer could not agree on PPP control protocols"

Any advise? thanks

what is battery life like while browsing (so using screen and 3G/ GPRS)?

to handle memory effectively and allow X to close programs and to easliy switch between programs download V BAR (vieka.com)..works wonders .It is the worlds smallest task manager (about 8kb -I think). Infact, now when using v bar,I can run Skype,Msn messenger and my Email application simultaneously..reagrding using as extenal modem--I use it daily!ill PM u my phone no...and we can go through it....
Battery life: if you online all the time - messenger etc and browsing and auto email downloads on 3G : max 7 hours...that's if u online using 3G!if using GPRS it gives longer time(didnt check how long)if using as phone and occasional use of Excel etc and checking email- lasts a day and night(standby)
however, I know leave it plugged in to PC for synch or as modem...in both cases it automatically charges from USB so I'm never with an empty battery--like now I have 45% battery power and haven't charged since it was on PC yesterday at 4pm - so it lasted through the night.
ANYWAY, me and my looong stories...
basically, don't expect a phones battery life-this is pathetic when compared to a phone!
however, this is not a phone! Compare it to your laptop as it replaces the laptop in almost all tasks....

Just as matter of interest: Using V Bar:
had the ffg programs running:
Email client ( Microsoft )
Msn Messenger
Skype
Active Sync
and a had the Phone application open on a Speakerphone call
( i made the call whilst on 3G and therefore my 3G data connection was not dropped and i was sending mail - on GPRS you cant have voice and Data simulatan. as far as i know )
Free memory: 10.97mb
not bad...

If you are on an existing contract up for renewal, speak with your SP. i got mine down to R999 for a KJAM on ProCall 120 (existing contract).

K Jam on Business Time

You guys should not let the independant retailers pull the wool over your eyes. They think they can charge you anything cause the product is brand new on the market.

I just got off the phone from 808. The guy said to me that the K Jam is available for free on the business time contract. This contract is cheaper than the procall 120 and includes the phone for free (Yahoo!!!!) only drawback is that the contract doesn't include any bundled minutes.

Got my JASJAR over the weekend....

I'm a newby on PDA's, so any tips would be appreciated.
Where can I get accessories like car chargers, poach etc for it?

I use Digi-Nav for GPS, and it seems to work great.

Cheers
Michael

That's just great. You are very lucky. I have to wait another 2 months. But hopefully that means that the price will be lower by then.

The JASJAR is a great phone as long as you have at least 1GB SD Card in it.
