hi,

we're moving offices and getting a virtual pabx and each staff memeber will get an imate k-jam.

is this a decent er... phone - cuz i am not a cell phone person at all considering my personal phone is a nokia 1100.

just a bit concerned that this imate is the sze of a fairly small brick.

anyways i have no choice in which phone we get, just wondering if it is conveniant cuz the last thing i want is to look like some freak with more then 1 c-phone.

Whats wrong with having 2 phones hey hey!!

I tested the k-jam for about a month and found it to be a semi-decent fone OR a semi-decent pda. There isn't enough memory in the thing for it to be able to do everything a person (me) would like it to do, like run a couple of applications at the same time. If you choose to use the built in Skype, you can basically ONLY run Skype, very resource hungry.

Another problem I had is that it doesn't have the traditional keypad, so doing things like sms and dialing become hell of a difficult to do whilst driving, not looking at the fone, only using one hand. The design of the thing basically requires you to focus all your attention on it whilst using.

Whats also damn annoying is when you do want the thing to do a bit of multitasking and it insists on falling over. I found the soft reset button quickly and used it about 3 times a day.

To cut a long story short, I found that it doeas a sterling job as an IM device, running Agile Messenger.

What I did was, buying the K-Jam i tested, I got an N70, does all the tricks I want and is about 19 million times more stable than the K-Jam.

In my experience, obviously.

yeah was reading the link posted above and in the comments section some dude suggested an app or somethign that helps with stability - i will probably only use the thing for IM, email (when out of office) and offcourse a phone)

but thanks for the run down.

um - skype on a cellphone ? :confused:

Skype on a Pocket PC more specifically, it uses GPRS and or Wi-Fi to connect. It doesn't live up to expectations though, I found it quite dissapointing actually. Obviously call's just aren't viable on GPRS and they actually don't work too well on Wi-Fi. Something I noticed aswell is that you can send instant messages but can't recieve them, I'm not sure if that was a problem specific to this unit though.

Now I'm waiting in anticipation for Skype on Symbian.

If you are planning to use it for IM and mail as you said, it should do the job, it manages to connect to mail servers quite efficiently using GPRS as well as do the whole Agile Messenger thing with Push to Talk.

Just don't try and type and sms or IM while you're driving :D

Battery life is also quite short, although I must say that I was pretty demanding of the thing while I was using it.

Interesting post. I had a k-jam for about 3 weeks until I sold it (for way less than it's worth).

I would have posted EXACTLY what you said...but instead of getting the N70 - I'm getting the N80 (I want the W/Lan) :-)

K-jam is great as an allrounder, it's just not very good at anything.

Biggest problem for me is that I couldn't use it with one hand. I do alot during the day, and I also need to dial or send a quick message while driving and you couldn't use the kjam with one hand. To do anything "important" I'd have to slide it open, pull out the stick and start tapping away. Even sending sms's was a mission,as you would have to open the messages - then use the stylus to select text messages (my fingers are big OK?) and then start tapping away at the keypad.

One other thing I couldn't handle was the incredibly long non-stopping vibration for calls and sms's when the phone was on silent (where I mainly kept it).

I want a phone, with some extra functionality...not a palm that has phone features built in!

It was one month old, perfect condition, with it's box and all. I sold it for R3000 after trying to get R3500 for two weeks. :D

I remember seeing it for free on a procall 120 or 200 somewhere along the lines. It might have been a special.
