ok, does anybody know why they closed the Imax @ the BMW Pavillion @ the V&A Waterfront a few years back? is the venue still equipped with the IMAX setup? seems like a great time to get it open again, especially with a world cup coming, it would be a great way to show case Africa...5 story screen usually does the trick...plus i REALLY want to see Avatar on that huge screen in 3D....saw the final Matrix movie there...was awesome....Cape Town needs it's IMAX back!!!!

tell me bout it! i was keen to watch Avatar in IMAX.. and when i checked to see where i could see it, only durbs and jhb have it...

I knew this would happen :P...we're all remembering the awesome things we've seen at IMAX.....but not working out why it was closed....or if it should be opened again etc.....loved that Indy Car flick they did....and the famous...Blue Planet...

I'm in the usa for a while and just saw Avatar on IMAX 3D... I want to go back another three times :P It was that sexy. If I had the $$ I would reopen IMAX cape town just for Avatar lol.

Was really excited about watching Avatar at menlyn Imax over the holiday. Phoned them to book and was told that they only show it in 2D!! How wrong is that?

The IMAX setup in Menlyn and Durban are original IMAX setups... they're not 3d Capable from what I know.

Any info on this... Just saw Avatar and Im kind if dissapointed that I didnt see it in 3D.... I know Canal Walk has regular 3D but it would have been awesome to see this in IMAX 3D... With more and more movies going 3D, special effects getting better and better, wouldnt it be a good time to reopen the IMAX at the Waterfront... A few years ago all you could watch in IMAX was Blue Planet (Which I did and it was awesome) and other Docu style programs, but with more Directors and Production houses releasing 3D movies wouldnt it be a good idea to reopen it?

Also the reason I think it closed is most probably because it wasnt making enough money, like most things that closes down... I remember seeing a 3D short at Ratanga Junction ones... Now is a good a time as ever to get IMAX/3D cinemas going...

Something that really annoyed me when I watched Avator tonight was the bad audio, the sound sometimes faded and was hollow then on the right side there were 3 or 4 vertical lines... Cinemas need to upgrade their systems to digital that also supports 3D... If more cinemas do this 3D movies will also be cheaper... R60 a seat at Canal Walk for a 3D movie is a bit expensive...

I've been wondering about this thread for a while.
Cape Town really needs an IMAX again....who ran the old BMW Pavilion IMAX at the V&A Waterfront...was it Ster Kinekor?

after the theatre closed in 2004, the building was converted into a conference centre.
The theatre part still remained, and as far as I know is still there.

The original seats are even still there.

The screen was removed, and they converted it into a theatre, as part of the conference centre.

What happened to the equipment, is anybody's guess. Maybe it's still there.

Here's a link, which you should see the theatre for yourself, http://www.thepavilion.co.za/includes/vtour.htm, then click on "Theatre at the Pavillion", and you should see the theatre in it's current state.

Also, you should know that the conference centre apparantly relocated somewhere else, at the end of last year.
Maybe it's to restore the Imax theatre to it's former glory.

I'm sure it's cheaper then building a new imax building from scratch.

Is it really a big difference as opposed to a normal theatre? I get that the screen is bigger, but what else? Cavendish has excellent video and sound in their cinemas.

The screen is easily 2-3 times the size of a regular movie theatre.
The sound is/was amazing and the clarity of the picture was awesome.
Instead of watching a movie, you feel like you are in it.
It's definitely an experience over the best that Cavendish has to offer, which is pretty decent nowadays, especially since their upgrades.

Anyone know if the Imax theatre will open again in the Western Cape/Cape Town?

Opening in Cape Gate 12 December 2014

Nothing to get excited about, it's nothing like the old theatres, new digital theatre screens are about the same size as normal screens. They took the MAX out of IMAX.
