Is it true that this cinema is set to close soon?

Yip, but apparently Sterk Kinekor is going to put in a 3D IMAX, but that could only be a rumour. I think IMAX is closing end of June.

so there goes my Sunday afternoon entertainment

but their service was pathetic... everytime I called they never answered the calls except for once about 3 years ago when i managed to get them to hold tickets to Spiderman 3 for me, sometimes i'll stand at the front desk and you can hear their phones ringing, but the staff never answer.

why would they put in a 3D Imax if the normal Imax theatre isn't making money and closing down?

Well when you understand who currently runs the IMAX @ Gateway, it is no surprise!

Who does run Imax now? It was nu-metro but I think they gave up on Imax a while ago.
The problems with Gateway are the ticket prices are way too high for 40 minute documentaries, they don't have flavoured salt for popcorn and no cup holders.

This seems to be the problem all around: the Nu Metro in PE fills drinks half, popcorn is stale, all the spices are empty and the movie house floors are sticky and dirty (plus every now and then you'll find yourself in a theatre in which the air-con is broken). Can't remember when last I went to a cinema.

This is a problem at Numetro, Ster kinekor is quite different. Anyone else notice that sk popcorn is just better? Even a slush at SK is better. Also they never charge you for flavoured salt at sk (which many nu metro's now do). Most nu-metro's also don't take care of their theatres - broken seats, faded and torn material. At least that's what I find at the Pavillion (and especially the Galleria) also Brightwater.
There were a few sk theatres like that but most of them have been closed down now. In Durban musgrave is excellent (especially when you consider how much cheaper they are).

here in Pietermaritzburg, Nu-metro was shut down, due to poor service and soon followed SK at Durban Road Mall (Scottsvile) so now we only have one Cinema catering for 1.5milion people in the Pietermaritzburg region, that is Cine Centre, I can agree with many of you, Imax Theatre prices were too expensive, no wonder they are shutting down, i can only guess that advertisement was their downfall, peole only acknowledge IMAX whiel @ Gateway :D

I went to IMAX once and because of the cruddy service never went back again ... good to hear of more 3D screens!

well, i will miss the IMAX. Gonna go see a movie just for old time sake :)

Seems like IMAX is still around, I really think the screening of movies is generating revenue for them, I usually go in for the documentaries.
