Hi all,

I've got a number of PC's in the field using Fastrack Wavecom modems (GPRS/EDGE) on MTN that are supposed to be connected 24/7. Over the last couple of months connection to the net from these PC's has become somewhat erratic. They are running NetBSD 3.1 and connecting using pppd 2.4.3.

The connection appears to have been made just fine:

Serial connection established.
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/tty00
Remote message: Welcome!
local IP address 192.168.111.112
remote IP address 192.168.111.111
LCP terminated by peer
Connect time 0.0 minutes
Sent 48 bytes, received 17 bytes.

but the I get the LCP terminated by peer immediately after the connection is established. When it works it looks something like this:

Serial connection established.
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/tty00
Remote message: Welcome!
local IP address 172.26.87.38
remote IP address 192.168.111.111

The only difference that I can see is that the local IP address when it fails is always 192.168.111.112 and when it succeeds its always 172.26.xxx.xxx.

The script restarting the connection will re-attempt every 10 seconds following a failure. And once it fails it keeps failing except if I power the modem down and then up again I'll immediately be issued a 172.26.xxx.xxx address and the connection will succeed.

Anyone got any ideas? It seems like a modem problem but I cannot imagine why? These PC's are unmanned so resetting the modem manually is a bit of an issue.

Thanks!!
