Hello everyone,

I have a plan to buy a car to a friend of mine in Maputo. I'm a foreigner who's living in Johannesburg with a temporary residence permit of 5 years.

I would like to have your advices about it. Is it easy to do that? How expansive are the taxes? Did you do it before?

Thanks for your help...

No, its not easy to do.

Its liable to get you no car once the police decide to crush it.

Save your money, and buy a car locally if you need a set of wheels.

You need...

1 - You must apply for a permit to import the car
2 - Proof of ownership, showing the value, certified by a commissioner of oaths
3 - The car must pass a roadworthy inspection to make sure it complies with S A standards ( R407,00)
4 - You must pay VAT on the value of the car at 14% on the VATtable value, which is not just the value of the car
5 - If the car is more than 2 years old, you are not usually charged ad-valorem duty

This website is helpful - http://www.gov.za/services/import/importing-second-hand-or-used-vehicle

You must be on of the legit ones, especially coming to a forum to ask for help, and not the dealer that got you here. :p

Are you implying that most foreign nationals are not legit?

If you're talking to Wasabee!, then I don't think he's implying it.

If he is, though, I'll make the statement very clear. Most foreign nationals in this country are not legit.

Why not buy an exJapanese car, import it, register it in Maputo then bring it to SA so that you can drive it with Mozambican plates. The last I heard you given a free 1 year permit to drive the car here in SA

But with the Maputo plate I'll be harassed by the cops all the time in Joburg.

To clarify the situation about the immigration stuff: yes i'm a french legit expatriate with a work permit in the country !

Anyway, I found a Land Rover Discovery from 2000, with 150.000km here in Joburg (for R70.000). I heard very mixed opinions about Land Rover here... Any insight? Thanks

They are very good. V8 or TD5?
The defender is currently the best value for money 4x4 you can buy in V8.

If you buy the Landy, save R70K for spare parts as well.

Find yourself a good mechanic if you're buying a landrover.
