I'm going over to the US in April and I'm getting a new notebook there. What are the charges when I'm coming back?

And if I decide to say that it was a company purchase/expense, are there any forms I need to fill out?

I thought that import duties on electronic goods were no longer valid. Or am I

I just want to be sure about this... I can up my budget by 10% if it's not!

Know where I can find out?

Phone SARS and get it all in writing, so you can show it to the relevant people on your return?

Just leave with an empty laptop bag...and return with a full one... thats what I did :p

Careful on that on one: in principle you have to fill out forms (replete with serial numbers) detailing the electronics you're leaving with; else SARS may well ask for a VAT payment when you return. I have no idea how closely this is enforced.

If you're leaving from Cape Town international, they have a very small area badly marked for this, and half the time the person responsible for doing it isn't there.... just about everyime I've left their desk was empty...

So...their loss :p

interesting topic...
what happens if I leave with one laptop (SA purchased) and come back with a US purchased? Who checks if they were swapped? Declare when leaving and decalre when arriving?

They usually don't check... but when you leave, you're supposed to fill in a form with the serial number, and it gets stamped, when you come back, and they check your stuff, you present the form and they check the serial numbers back to the device.... not exactly fool proof.

After my last trip to the US, i game back with two lappies, and just marched straight out of arrivals without anyone blinking an eye.

You'll probably want the manuals, invoice, and disks so mail them to yourself so customs doesnt by chance come across them. Dont be afraid to get the lappy a little bit grubby - a few greasy fingerprints cant hurt and will come off easily.

before you go back up your old emails to cd-r, import them to outlook on your new lappy. If they stop you show them the date of the emails. sorted :)
