Import duties on new MBP

Oh and remember something just for interest sakes.The idea of imports and exports is to enable a country to bring in certain things be it raw materials finished goods etc THE COULD NOT BE PRODUCED IN THAT COUNTRY

It is therefore that these types of taxes were born.They want to have it generally favourable tax wise for items that are not produced in South africa and to tax you heavily if it can be produced.I'm sure a lot of people already know this but keep it in mind the next time you QQ about the price of importing something.I vehemently will hunt and research something in South africa before I attempt to import it due to well increase in tax.No on enjoys paying twice the price just to get it here when you could get it instantly for half the price if made in south africa.

I said if you have done everything you can research wise for something local and you are prepared to pay more to bring it into SA,no one is stopping you,nor criticising in fact it interests me that with the snide remark that anyone would help you...

Doesnt take much to put a smile on someones face,but adds so much if everyone tried.

Computer equipment generally has no or low import duty, as do a number of other electronic goods. That ties in with import duties being a means for countries to protect local industries. Some non-electronic goods do have strangely high import duties considering there is not much, if anything, equivalent that is made locally. But it is a far cry from the punitive duties on almost everything that were charged 30 years ago.

So I spoke to my tax lecturer, I was correct.

You do not add the customs duty to the value and then times by 10%. You add the 10% and then the customs duty. ie You will get a lower VAT amount.

For what it may be worth a friend flew back from amsterdam recently. He bought a sony laptop there for around R5000. He was charged about R600 duty on entry here.

We'll have to agree to disagree, my lecturer is a CA and has her masters in tax, now obviously that does not make her 100% correct all the time but she said that is how it is.

Also seeing as the website I posted earlier did it the same way I think I will stick to my method.

Mr A imports a compact-disc player into the Republic from Hong Kong. On the date on which the CD player is entered for home consumption, he would be required to pay VAT on the following:

Customs duty value of goods - R5 000
Import duties:
excise duty (say) - R1 000
import surcharge (say) - R 600

plus
10% of value for customs duty purposes (10% x R5 000) (known as upliftment charge) - R 500

Total - R7 100

VAT payable on importation = 10% x R7 100

In this case it is import at great discount. I saved about R4k last time I imported my MBP.
