Hey guys,

Does anyone know what % Customs charge on a package purchased from overseas specifically the US?

What is in the package?

That will determine any additional duties.

The cost is R30 (clearance fee) + value of contents x 1.1 x 0.14 (vat on 110% of the value of the items being imported) + duties (if any).

Also depends if they include an invoice :p

I bought some stuff from China and the guy sent it in a brown package with no invoice. Paid R35 @ local post office.

Don't forget the "inspection fee" they charge if they decide to open the package and check whats inside :S

I usually budget for 25% for PC and electronic devices (10% import duties & 14% vat) if the sender can cook the invoice, it helps!

Oh my word 25% of the total value? The package is a hard drive and some ram so it shouldn't be particularly heavy or large. I'vehad it sent through fedx so I'm assuming the customs charges will be the same?

Fedex will charge a R160 clearance fee for handling the matter for you IIRC (instead of R30 by the post office)
