Hi guys!

I'm looking into importing a electronic product from the US sometime soon and just wondering what the tax implications will be when it arrives in SA?

The product is a Stanton DJC4 controller, retailing at $349. The website I'm buying it from gives me free shipping, so it's quite a bargain.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You want to download this file: http://www.bitd.org/Download.aspx?ID=569
( It is named South_Africa_2008.pdf )
( http://www.bitd.org/ - Bureau International des Tarifs Douaniers or in Eng: International Customs Tariffs Bureau)
( This is just show I am not linking to a random document )

What you will find in that document, is shipping codes and descriptions, customs tariff header.

Now what I did in the past is, I emailed the company that will be shipping the product to me, asking what customs tariff header they add on the label of the package. Their reply was "8528 51 00 00" which you then use to look up in the above linked document.

That will show you any extra tax you will pay on top of the regular 14% VAT. If the entry shows free free free free, you will only need to pay 14% VAT.

This is my understanding at least. I am still awaiting my package but I expect I will pay at least the 14% VAT.

It is actually better if they show the shipping separate, and not included in the price of the product, as you do not pay tax on the shipping.
