Good day

Does anyone has experience in importing electronic goods? I wanted to buy a monitor. In the USA I can buy it for 500$ (thats approximatly R5000). In SA it cost R8000. Thats R3000 difference. But now I do not know how much duties and taxes are. In the past I didn't have a good impretion of the SA import clearance office. They always charged me for stuff, that I didn't even know what it was. And complaining doesn't always work. Sometimes they will just send the package back to the seller.
Does somebody know how much tax I will pay on a R5000 monitor? Will it be only 14% VAT?

What other computer hardware will you recommened to import? Do you maybe know a good shop?

Thanks!

Would also love to know this - anyone brought a laptop or similar electronic device into the country recently?

same here i will love to know how to do it and who to use and the price also

and someone who wont take ages to do it

Import duty & taxes when importing into South Africa
Duty Rates
Duty rates in South Africa vary from 0% to 45%, with an average duty rate of 18.74%. Some goods are not subject to duty (e.g. laptops, electric guitars and other electronic products).

Sales Tax
VAT applies to most imports at 14% of the sum of the value of the goods plus any duty and excise payable, increased by a factor of 10%.

Minimum thresholds

Import goods with a value up to 500 ZAR are exempt of duty and VAT.

Dont know how valid those figures and rules are :/

Screens less than 18"

Tariff Heading : 8528.51.10
Duty : 0% (both 'General' & EU)

Screens greater than 18"

Tariff Heading : 8528.51.90
Duty : 25% ('General' - all regions excl. EU)
Duty : 0% (EU - supplier must provide EUR1 Certificate proving goods are of EU origin)

VAT = upliftment of cargo value by 10% x 14% of that total value.

Express companies such as DHL / TNT will be quite costly as they include their own documentation, customs clearance, agency and other fee's into the total freight rate. Airfreight rate's are at a peak right now so expect total freight to exceed USD 80.00

I personally wouldnt order something as fragile as a screen from overseas, but you might want to check out parcelforwarders on google. Some peeps have had success with them if the courier charges too much.

At a minimum you're probably looking at R1000 for shipping, R770 for VAT and R165 foreign currency on the card transaction. So it will be close to R7000 even if there are no duties. If there are any the saving will be neglible.

On an expensive item like this their fees for clearance are a small part of the cost. The primary cost will be the shipping.

My customs list has another category - no side exceeding 45cm - also under 8528.51.

Thread rez time again. :p

So did anyone ever import a screen and did you get raped on import duties? I recently bought a graphics card from Amazon and while I did have to pay an import fee deposit I was lucky to have it refunded to me shortly after it arrived. Sadly I don't think I will be so lucky if the item is a computer monitor. :(

I really want to get this, but upon checkout Amazon wants to slap on a $300 import fee deposit! :wtf: I understand that's most likely to cover VAT, 25% MFN duty and 7% ad valorem tax but if I look at this, I'm thinking I can get this monitor shipped to a friend, which gives me the added peace of mind of him testing it for dead pixels & backlight bleed before shipping, and having him specify it as something else to avoid the exorbitant import fees customs charges. Could that work?

For $599 you should be looking at about $265 for VAT and duties. You might get away with misrepresenting the contents you might not, in South Africa, but as I recall it is a criminal offence in the US for the sender to put false information on the form.

There's a brand of audio component I like and they recently launched a simple international shipping option. Gives you a single figure in Rands to get the unit here. I just tried two units and shocked

Unit 1 was $599 and comes in at just over R13,000, everything included

Unit 2 was $1999 and comes in R38,000, everything included.

Granted, these are heavy and shipping is a chunk!
