Hi, If I want to import some goods from china is it necessary to have an import license? If so what does one cost ?

It depends how often you want to import. If just once of then no.

It is free. SARS website can help you. Need to fill out forms and give sup doc and apply.

My business partner imports large quantities from China on a monthly basis
if you are interested I can put you in contact with him.

He has been through the ringer with importing and if you don't know what you doing you can get burnt very badly, e.g. forwarding agents etc

In general when we have manufacturing to protect the imports are quite high for instance car parts are 15-35% depending on what it is.
Electronics mostly dont have but TV's and others do.
There is a place where you can look it up on one of the government sites just google around a bit.

Customs duties are also on SARS website. Different items have diff %.
