VERY IMPORTANT: An e-mail scam in on the loose and is spreading particularly fast.

You receive an e-mail supposedly from you bank (i.e. FNB or Absa) that inquires you to confirm your bank details. A link is provided that you are asked to click on and then it directs your browser to a fake website that looks similar to your banks website (known as a phishing site)

Here you are asked to enter you bank details incl. your account number and password!

DO NOT GIVE ANY OF YOUR DETAILS AWAY!!!!!!! THE DETAILS CAN BE USED TO STEAL YOUR MONEY!!!!

Your bank will never ask you to submit details like these through an e-mail or on the internet, NEVER!!!

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!

VERY IMPORTANT: As of today a E-mail based scam has started.

It's called phishing and its been around for about twenty years . . . (though the first recorded use of the term fishing apparently only goes back to 1996).

NO, you understood me wrong. HAHA I don't mean that phishing has started today, I mean this specific scam started today. And I know it happens all the time, but this one is spreading particularly fast.

this exact scam did not start today, it started about 10 minutes after internet banking was introduced....

OH OK, I give up! Then I meant that it's spreading faster now then it was the past time.

Welcome to the Internet.

Please make sure your Capslock is in the upright position and your BS detector is switched on.

The worst is most of the sites does not even look close to the acual sites of the said bank

You'd be amazed how well some site kits are made to look

I actually broke into one of these sites to grab the source, got a nice ZIP file with php-mailer,html pages and images used. Was quite well done

*Note to phishers, listen bright sparks conf files are there for a reason, apache is more than happy to give full folder access without it

Based on what information? I haven't seen any increase in phishing notifications.

But if you do get one of these mails you should report it to your bank or your ISP so that they can deal with the scams.
