Importing a car to SA

Someone on the forum mentioned that SARS had finally explained what is needed to import a car to SA after a court-case.

Seems pretty standard but where the f*** would I even begin with a
Interpol Clearance Certificate

Are they trying to make the process overly difficult OR just to prevent stolen cars from entering our shores from Moz etc.

They seem to be making it difficult. An alternative would be importing the car to Namibia and keeping the license up to date by driving up there every so often to renew (limited knowledge on that). I wanted to import a Japanese car at one point but it wasn't clear what the actual requirements were to do it by the book.

If I was too import I really wouldn't want to go through all this admin.

Curious if anyone on the forum has actually gone through this entire route
 
Not possible unless you have been living overseas and even then it's a massive undertaking.
 
I wonder if this is how the 2 Tesla’s I’ve seen driving around lately came in. Or are they official units undergoing testing?
 
I imported 2 some years ago.
You have to be resident in a foreign country for at least 2 years. And proof needed.
Interpol clearance.
Data dot.
Tax clearance certificate.
Weigh station clearance.
SABS clearance or whatever it's called now.
Local registration on ENatis.
Roadworthy.
License disk.
About 9 months to do all this.
This all is to protect the local car manufacturing cartel.
 
I have 2 x friends who have imported cars themselves, bit of a schlep, but the cars were worth it (1998 Supra and 1986 Hachi Roku (AE86))
Then there are 2 x car sales companies that specialise in the service also. Rospa imports and Skylow Imports.
