Hey guys,

I believe this was asked several times on MYBB, but I cannot seem to find it.

What are the costs involved when importing a car?
Also does anyone have an estimated import cost on the transport to get it here?

Then how would one go about registering an imported car in S.A?

Any advice and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Registering an import in SA is very expensive. You typically pay the cars value in taxes to have it locally registered. I believe there are some ways to get around this, such as owning the car for 'x' amount of time overseas before importing it.

I'd also love to hear a bit more from someone who has recently done this.

Google is your friend.

* Customs duty = 36% (motor cars more than 20 years old are subject to 20% customs duty)
* Ad valorem customs duty (based on a sliding scale depending on the value of the vehicle, with a minimum of 0.75% and a maximum of 20%)
* Value-added tax (VAT) = 14%

As an example, the cumulative duties and taxes payable on a car with a value of approximately R200 000 are about 70% of the market value. All vehicles with a value for ad valorem customs duty purposes of less than R130 000 do not pay ad valorem customs duty on importation into South Africa.

If the original purchase invoice is not available, three written valuations must be obtained from motorcar dealers in the country of export to assist the customs clearance process in South Africa.

All used motor vehicles are subject to the production of an Import Permit that must be obtained prior to the vehicle being shipped to South Africa.

If you are moving to South Africa and bringing your vehicle with you the taxes and duties are a bit less but still a lot.

I have seen a few of those monster Ford F250's driving around. How do those guys get them into SA?

Ah didn't know that. Probably damn expensive. And you need a code 10 for that? :wtf:

Yes - it's so bloody big that Code 10 is essential. Ford has actually stopped bringing them in because of the Code 10 story.

Amazing to think that the F250 is America's top selling "bakkie" - If I recall, There are more F 250's sold in a year, than we sell cars in SA.

Actually the F-150 is the best selling Ford pickup truck.
Ford sold 584,917 last year in USA alone and it's currently the best-selling truck for 34 years in the USA.

Thanks I thought it was the F250 - still bloody amazing numbers!
