Importing a Hi-Fi -- Duty?

So. I want to import a hi-fi. I need to! I need one that will read and stream the media off my NAS. What import duty will I pay? I've poked around on here and elsewhere, and I have a document -- Customs, Excise and Sales Duties and Surcharge -- that seems to indicate that I will pay nothing. But I really can't imagine getting a big box with like 4k through, and not paying much more than VAT.

You will pay VAT on 1.1x the amount. Then also check the doc on ad valorem duties, which seems like there is an excise and customs charge of 7%

So, it's like: ( [cost in £] x [exchange rate] ) x 1.1 x 1.14 x 1.7 + shipping, etc = TOTAL COST.

Although, I guess the 7% is not applied to the VAT too. Still. Quite a lot.
 
hi, its the amount at 110% of value, x 7% then VAT, of couse they apply the vat to the duties.
 
I'm after this. It comes out at about R5k excl shipping, according to the info above. I guess that's not too bad. I contacted the manufacturer and they don't sell it in SA.
 
Excuse my ignorance, but 5K seems like a lot of money to spend on an hi-fi that can connect to your network and rip MP3s. Why don't you just get a PC with decent speakers?
 
'Cus I want a decent looking system that can play CDs and live in the kitchen / living room. I'm currently using a PC (well, we have a couple of laptops) to play media around the house -- it's annoying to wait for them to boot up, just to play an album. And often the laptop's not in the place where the speakers are, so you have to move it and find the AC cord and plug it in. I might sound like a brat, but it's a mission.

I'm hoping to upgrade the NAS to a server of sorts quite soon and I want my blu-ray player to hit it and stream movies, my hi-fi to hit it and stream audio, etc...

I don't know if there's a better, more cost effective solution. I'm a sucker for good looks though. I don't want a clunky beige box in the kitchen with wires pouring out the back, and speakers all over the place.

edit: Also, I'm not really concerned about the ripping. I do that on a PC. I'm only really interested in this product 'cus it can stream wirelessly.

Fair enough, aesthetics are important. How about a 'normal' hi-fi with USB input and external hard drive? I'm sure that can be had for less than 5k.
 
What about one of the Logitech Squeezebox range?

I wonder if there's a wireless HDD that can be plugged into a USB-friendly hi-fi? One that I can push music to over the network...? hmm.

I use an Apple Airport Express on my network that will stream music (and act as a print server) from any of the household computers into the hifi. Very handy.

Will it work with a PC and a linux NAS? And can you pull music from the hi-fi rather than have to push it from a computer?
