Importing a Laptop from the USA

Hi Everyone.

So I would like to know if anyone has imported a laptop recently into SA from an outside country? I have a friend that lives in the USA and want to ask her to bring a laptop in for me. Does anyone know what it would cost to get it through customs?

What I saw (old information though) is that it would be more or less ITEM_PRICE_IN_RANDS * 1.1 * 0.14 + R25.

According to my calculations it will be about 10k cheaper doing it this way (for the specific item that I want). The problem with SA is that the local suppliers all get supplied from Pinnacle (for Alienware). So Pinnacle probably pay what I am going to pay now, then they add some on top of that and then the local suppliers add on top of that as well. So you end up with a bloated price because it went through a few hands to get to you.

Or less because they buy bulk.

I guess they have to feed their staff but sometimes the local suppliers take things to the extreme to the point where I'd rather organize importing etc myself instead of using local convenience.

Is she a South African citizen coming from holiday or is she coming from the US to a holiday here?
If the latter you don't have to worry. Just bring it in. Ask her to unbox it first. Customs only care if you are returning from another country.

I would make sure that the warranty is global and can be honoured by pinnacle - murphy is one f'd up mother

or if you are in gauteng, i have a dealer account with pinnacle and you could use that to buy directly from them
