Any Idea what translation rates customs use when converting us value to rands.

I know there's only vat, and that the customs value is 1.1x the value of the product if you import from the us.

So, any answers?

Usually 10% but customs can totally get it wrong sometimes. What phone you importing? Off EBAY?
I find it so much easier getting a phone from Orange. Delivered in a few days to my home via courier. What you see on their website is what you pay in total.

Yes, but my problem with Orange is that they have a poor selection of dual sim phones as compared to eBay.

You can pretty much get dual sim versions of any phone on eBay (excluding, of course, iPhones).

The Chinese site work well. There are also some local sites offering Chinese phones, from local stock, with local 12 month warranty. These cost a small bit more but without the long wait and duties.

Try www.zasttra.com. I'm partial to the Doogee and Leagoo phones.

Geekbuying here too, had the same experience with TNT, however the Vernee Apollo Lite that is on it's way could only be sent via registered airmail because of coming from the HK warehouse.

Hold up. I'm late to the party but as far as I am aware, a phone attracts 15% customs duty and 7.5% ad valorem. But it has been 5 odd years since I last looked.

If the phone is classified as a computer on the other hand, then it is 0% duties.
