Has anyone had experience importing AVR recievers. Some models in the states are half (or even less) the price of the same models here. I also dont particularly want to wait the delay for one particular denon 2012 model to be released locally. Has anyone imported / have any tips?

Only downside i can see is the warranty and if something goes wrong and i need to get it fixed locally at my own cost. Not sure what shipping and taxes will cost but surely it won't be double?

Every Amp I looked at was 100-120v only so u need a transformer. Also the Radio portion doesn't work as the frequencies they use are slightly different.

As you most probably know, the USA market is sufficiently large for the manufacturers to create models specifically tailored for the USA. So it is quite possible that the model that you are interested in might well never be released in South Africa.

Ditto spare parts. If something does go wrong you may well find that the spares are not available locally.

Have you emailed the local agents - [email protected] - with regards to your requirements ?

thanks have tried mad but they dont know about the specific model i was after. all good might hold off or try to find something similar locally.

BTW, was speaking to a friend who pointed out that a transformer for an amplifier is not so easy: one must cope with the total draw of the amp - say 500W - plus [say] 50% for headroom.

Then there is the 50Hz [ZA] vs 60Hz [USA] problem ...

I brought in a Onkyo HT Kit, just for the AV Rec 4 years back, purely because upsampling HDMI receivers weren't available here, and it was cheaper than locally availably models. Through wantitall, nogal, who are not cheap!. Bought a big switched transformer which has 4 US sockets. Still going fine...

Regarding warranty, bear in mind that it's a piece of electronics, with virtually no moving parts. Not like a printer, dishwasher etc. The probability of it dying before it's obsolete (6 years?) is really small.

Good luck
Ian

Good Advice - SA supply is not good for AVR HDMI Receivers (Stand-Alone). What did it cost you?
