Importing cell phones

Open your cell phone, see the ICASA sticker on it?
Now, goto the ICASA website, and get the contact numbers and make contact.

Please note that ICASA has absolutely no interest in allowing you to import these devices, only the selected few have that privilege. And they gained that privilege through paying massive license fee's and, of course, the fluffing of certain individuals pockets.

These select few will of course jump up and down and demand retribution if you are allowed to compete with them.

Are you speaking from experience davemc or have you run into dead ends youself?

So, as far as most posts go, a non-ICASA phone is OK for personal use/import. In bulk is where they get sticky?

I'm looking at bringing back a couple of phones after my next trip overseas. Will chuck boxes etc, so they don't look obviously new.

When bring such stuff in through customs, where you do not declare but they 'catch' you, is there a fine for trying to avoid the payment? Or do they just charge what you would have paid had you declared anyway?

If the latter, it's worth not declaring every time...

Always imported my phones/products in boxes, not a fan of selling a product without its packaging. Even carried a few as hand luggage and haven't been hassled about it as I the invoices for the phones. I think the more sneaky you act the more problems you will incur if you do get caught.

Not too worried about being sneaky. Just want to know if there is a penalty of sorts for failing to declare. Something to make declaring worthwhile.

It seems to me that there is no reason not to try your luck every time...

Serious penalties so not worth it. If the guy is in a bad mood then you will be nailed.

Ahh. Pity. That also true for your average holiday-maker-returning-with-some-nice-electronics? I'm not talking about a suitcase stuffed with phones...

I couldn't find any answers in my quick check of the SARS/immigration site. Good idea to keep receipts though: if they try to price the goods for you based on our prices, you will get nailed

I think I've derailed the thread though...

My mom nearly got busted a year ago bringing in a camera. For the last 30 yrs she has never had a problem (she lives in OZ and comes to SA about 3 times a year) until then.

She has vowed never to try this again and declares everything.

Hi,

I know this thread is 7 years old but I was wondering if your are importing cell phones and if we could be of assistance in that regard? I represent one of the largest global freight companies and specialize in the Hi-tech industry.

Hi,

responding to your thread though I know it is 5 years old. Are you importing cell phones, did you manage to succeed?
I represent a major freight company and specialize in the Hi tech sector, I would be happy to assist with any current freight requirements or registrations etc.
