Sup guys,

I am looking into importing electronics from overseas and it will be sort of my own brand name on these products. A friend told me that it has to be certified by SABS? Is this the only thing that needs to be done? I already have an importers code and I am a registered importer.

Thanks.

What kind of electronics are you going to import? And where from.As not all appliances are capable of working on South African power sources (220v 50Hz)

The only electronics that need to be certified by the SABS are devices connected directly to the mains which also provide a distribution. Not transformers or power supplies.

If the device can communicate like a phone or router, you need to have it tested by ICASA - cost is about R 60 000 per unit. I had some alarm panels checked thus, it took about 3 months and lots of paperwork. It is better for a patent attorney to handle this for you.

Most low voltage devices have auto-switching power supplies. Ok from 100V to 240 VAC. Frequency does not matter

I was surprise to hear how they test telephones.[sabs]
Check the amps and Independence. [hope spell correctly=inpedansie]
You will think they test the cradle and bottoms.

Nope they check it won't break Telkom, is all

Tablet PCS with Android OS, and maybe phones... Also things like USB Flash drives, External Hard Drives, etc.. Do I need to register with any quality association in South Africa? These products are CE Certified.
