I have been looking at importing some IT and Electronics products from China .

Anybody have any advise in advance to some tips in this regard.

Or pitfalls to watch our for?

Thanks

I can guarantee that any parcel marked as being from China is going to get stopped at customs. Without fail, even one I've received from the far east has been stopped. It's a random shot when importing from the west.

Have your dodgey invoice and bank transaction statement ready. :D

I want to import ligit , nothing dodgey , I want to resell the products.

China = mostly crap if you are not very selective about the brand.

Yeah the cheapies are...what they are...cheapies

Though you do get some good stuff...you will need a chinese guy to research the Chinese forums on experiences with the products...or ask around.

If not you might get more trouble than its worth when reselling it over here.

Chances are you'll get something different from what you ordered.....if it does reach you that is.
How much worth of stuff are you looking at importing?

I import regularly from china, all you have to do is ask the seller to mark the item as a sample and then customs wont charge u customs fees on it , last thing i imported was a via sata card, worked out around +-R85 plus shipping and it took about just over 20 days to get here

One thing to bear in mind importing from China .Quality varies .They show you one thing A grade products and send you another .Chinese are very money conscious people .To them money first and then the business. But be careful many pretend to be factories and producers .They turn out to be middle man under false pretenses selling for larger producer etc.

Good source for It Products are Taiwan and Hong Kong .Many factories located there as well under Taiwanese control .Bit more expensive but worth the extra bucks spend .quality and peace of mind

eXpansys what can you tell me?

When importing from any country the treatment is the same, naturally the ZA SARS Customs & Excise to tend to be more meticulous with incoming shipment originating from Asia & Middle East as there tends to be a habit of under declaring the goods in order to avoid lower duties. Remember VAT will always be payable, whether the goods are declared as a sample or not.

Whilst you can get away with declaring goods as a sample to avoid duties there are two things to take into account :
1) Depending on your freight company, the goods may only be insured for the declared value, generally a sample is declared at a very-low value so if it were to go "missing" the insurance would only cover you for the low value.
2) You will only be able to get away with a sample for a few times, eventually they will start to pick up that you're a frequent importer and request further certificates in terms of import code / icasa radio dealer certificate etc...

Lastly in the event of underdeclaring a shipment and the shipment getting stopped, customs may request a supplier price list to verify the prices stated as well as proof of payment for the goods which can become a nightmare but also take an extended amount of time to get the goods out.
