Hi,

I intend importing fuel from Venezuela, since the cost of a liter of petrol there is only $0.01.

What is the procedure?

Does anyone have any advise?

What tax do you pay when bringing the fuel into SA?

Thanks,

Salman

I know a person that does this, but he brings in Diesel and the red tape and paperwork and requirments are a nightmare. Petrol will be even worse as its regulated more tightly than diesel is.

If you are bringing in anything less than a full fuel tankers worth, it won't be viable.. and Venezuela won't sell you the fuel at that price, they will have a different export price.

First, is to actually do a research on what is their export price, because you clearly dont realize that the government is subsidising for their citizens from the export proceeds. Secondly, to find a freight company that will deal with this, as it requires a special dock which is usually booked throughout the year, as far as I heard.

1. Study the Petroleum Products Amendment Act 2003, Act 58 of 2003.
2. Get an Importers and Wholesalers Permit from Dept of Energy. Here's a list of Wholesaler applications refused 1-31 Dec 2017.
3. Get a supply contract with retailers. 99.99% already have supply contracts.
4. Get enough money to i. pay your supplier (with forex permissions), ii. pay shipping and insurance, iii. pay local warfage and storage (most tanks already taken, btw), iv. pay gov upfront for petrol levies and taxes, v. pay for distribution, vi. carry retailer credit for 4 months at least.
5. Prepare to lose your shirt as prices and/or forex rates change between your order on supplier and delivery to retailer.
6. Take out personal life cover.
