Do any of you guys know the steps needed to import goods into the country?
I found this lovely site http://www.services.gov.za/en-za/applytoimportgoodsintothecountry.htm

And although they give a lot of info i feel that there's something I'm missing because in the application form they ask for:

1. Customs Tariff Number
2. Customs Code Number
3. Applicant reference number(I think this I can get from Them)

If you want to get into importing I suggest you get hold of a company like ZATrans. You may not necessarily want an agent, but if you are getting into the business it is unavoidable. The reason I suggest ZAtrans is that they frequently give workshops on the whole importing / exporting scenario for free (with free food as well :D). It is worth the two afternoons of time. If you are interested I think I can find out when their next workshop is or at least give you the contact person. They give you a big manual that has tons of graphs and flowsheets that will help you with the whole importing scenario.

That would be great...have my hands full already. Don't really have time to go through all this Importing Acts Laws.
let me google them...
Thanks

I may be wrong but it looks like they do the actual importing from overseas.

Sounds good to me. I plan on launching in December/January if that's okay with you.

I will pay the supplier to import the goods to SA, but i need to do the rest. I'm just not sure what "the rest" is.

Has anybody ever bought a football shirt from overseas? What extra fees did you have to pay?

I have bought something from a US store before, but i gave my mother the cash, as i didn't have a credit card yet, i do remember seeing the 14% VAT, but are there extra costs?

I want to order a phone from expansys, do I pay only south african VAT, or VAT + duties, or only duties?

That's exactly what i want to know:confused:

European Union: The European Union and South Africa signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on the 11th of October 1999 following four years of negotiation. The agreement will be phased in over a ten to twelve year period and will essentially liberalise 86% of South Africa's imports from the EU and about 95% of EU imports from South Africa. The overall agreement meets WTO requirements of 90% coverage. The agreement is due to come into force on 1 January 2000 however, recent developments involving a dispute over South Africa's usage of certain terms relating to their wines and spirits may cause a delay in implementation.

Does this mean that i don't have to pay Import taxes(duties) for gods from UK?
Please there must be somebody out there who knows how this stuff works...

Regulations for importers

South Africa is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and follows the Harmonized System (HS) of import classification.

There is free exchange of trade between South Africa and the other four countries (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Swaziland) comprising the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). There will also be substantially free trade between South Africa and the European Union by 2008 as a result of a Free Trade Agreement. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Free Trade Agreement should also allow the free exchange of goods among the 14 countries of the region when it comes into full effect.

Please tell me this means that If i buy stuff from the UK i don't have to pay import duties/tax

Edit: Found this as well
Free Trade Agreement with the European Union: The FTA between South Africa and the European Union was signed on 11 October 1999 after five years of protracted negotiations. Essentially the agreement liberalises 86% of South African imports from the EU and 95% of EU imports from South Africa. The agreement, which is due to come into effect in January 2000, is currently being blocked as certain EU countries attempt to secure new concessions on South African exports of wines and spirits. It is likely that implementation of the agreement will be delayed until the issue of wine and a spirits exports is resolved.

Now i just need to get myself a credit card and get the ball rolling:)

Intresting,

it says that there is free trade between the EU, but then also something about 14 countries, and I am not sure if the former has yet came into effect.

There is an expansys UK, US and France, so Which one do I pick, could save 1k?

And what exactly does this 'free-trade' mean also, does it mean that you don't pay taxes on imports, or does it men that you don't pay duties on imports, or that it is both duty and tax free?

I think it means you don't pay the VAT(14% or whatever)
The import duties I THINK will be covered by the courier fee. In my case the company says they will deliver the product to my door.

Would need to get an experts opinion though to be 100% sure. Was hoping somebody on myBB would know but i guess I'll have to go see a lawyer:sick:
