I have been watching the Mybroadband Conference online today and there seems to be a lot of service providers, especially company's like Neotel, laying fiber and looking for ways to overcome the last mile obstacle or trying to find ways to cost effectively supply broadband services to people. Most companies say that it is not feasible for them to lay fiber to home. Given the success that wireless user groups have had in connecting people, is this not a way to bypass the problem? Is there not a way that these WUGS can pick up a fiber connections in the major cities and distribute throughout the network. I know this will not solve connection problems for people in rural areas, but it will be a start. I know this is just a crude idea and a lot of detail must be worked out, but surely there must be a viable business model in maybe connecting 20 users to one fiber connection and sharing the cost.

Not really. The WUGs will have to apply for a license if they want to provide Internet connectivity over the network.

nice idea, unfortunately for legal reasons a WUG may not distribute internet without WISP licensing -which is quite expensive. IMO the only hope is for government to pull finger, open the market to other POTS carriers, and push for LLU.

Did not know you would need a license. Ok, lets hope the government comes to the party.
