Hi All,

Has anyone been experiencing somewhat significantly improved speeds from Sentech for the past week or so? I have had a call logged with Sentech since March this year and nothing was done until last week sometime when I have noticed that I am getting download speeds of at least 20k/s on MW128.

I was just about to cancel the contract and go for ADSL, but if the speeds are going to improve then maybe I'll hold back.. but I would appreciate it if they reduced the price of their still lower than industry standard services.

response from Sentech..

Just got this e-mail from sentech support. I think the support guy is praying really hard that the software works .. see his ending:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are getting in touch with you to advise that our technicians have implemented a new bandwidth management system that has increased the speeds on the MyWireless service and also reduced the latency.

At this point we would like to gather some feedback from you and are requesting that you please provide us with further speed tests done at the following urls:

http://www.sentech.co.za/speedtest/display_speed.php
http://www.bandwidthplace.com
http://www.beelinebandwidthtest.com
http://www.toast.net/performance

Also, we have attached a file "winMTR.doc" which you need to rename to "winMTR.zip", extract and install. Once this has been installed on your system please run tests to www.cisco.com and www.sentech.co.za and provide the results to us?

Kind Regards and Blessings

Well, I don't really know how this will last, but hopefully for a long time. I do however, think that Sentech should consider reducing their prices to be more competitive with the World and Telkom at the moment.. maybe then I can upgrade to 512K...

well I am getting the kind of speeds i used to get a month before they implemented the bandwidth management system

I find that i can run both emule and browse at the same time lately.

Thats what they "tuned" me

Good day

Please be advised that we have made changes in the past
week or so. Therefore you should see a change in regards to
your throughput.

Regards
Sentech Support

ja speeds are acceptable for me lately, considering i got the 128K package. But now i'm starting to get an issue with the price, although i still got a year to go on my contract. At the time of signup, it was worth it but given the recent ADSL price reductions, Mywireless should up their offering b/c they're losing their attractiveness fast... they're not going to attract new or retain old clients.
Frankly, a 128K package doesn't even have a place in the 'broadband' market anymore (if it ever had). so either it should become cheaper, or obsolete as they upgrade everyone to 256K

One thing that Telkom ADSL cannot match is the no cap issue.

the no cap on sentech is a myth in any case, for a 128K package, they consider 10 Gig of traffic (up AND down) the limit for 'acceptable use'
for the 256K package it's 20G. Quite a bit i agree, but it's not 'uncapped'

Vlad, I've used way over 20GB a few times and have never received any form of email or notice from Sentech. According to NoWire, the 'cap' does not exist. I suppose its the same as Sentech denying there was a throttle when all the users were clearly being throttled.

Also note that the AUP does not mention any bandwidth limits. For them to say that its the acceptable use value, it should be on their site in the AUP.

i've reached 17 gig in april (although no way of verifying this without installing some monitoring software b/c they don't make your usage available) and i got the polite and friendly phonecall. They suggested that i'd upgrade to the 256K package and then i would get 20 gig of traffic (that's what they said)
Also their AUP policy basically gives them the right to do whatever they want (upgrade you package - and payments without your consent, or even cancel your contract) when they think you're not adhering to it. The Sentech AUP is actually scary...
And you would be surprised how quickly one reaches 10 gig of traffic, especially when it's not just downstream traffic (for you ADSL people out there, you probably agree :P)

There is a 10GB cap on MW128. I have read this somewhere before as well. I haven't reached that cap, so don't know what would happen.

However, I do agree that Sentech is definitely loosing its attractiveness to me. If you compare what Telkom's 512 ADSL is going to cost from August it makes sense to just switch to them. I also worry about the cap, but we can't expect to pay what we do on a 128k package and receive the speeds we do and still sit back.

I think that a revolution in the industry needs to start happening and that these service providers need to learn something about customer service. Sentech have been very quite recently and so has its subscribers.

Sentech needs to start answering to its users. As for the AUP - that piece of documentation will never hold up in court same as their contract! A friend of mine is an attorney and when she read it the contract she burst out laughing that a company the size of Sentech can have such a stupid contract.

One last thing - the thing that will always stand in our favour is that when we signed up for Sentech's MyWireless - we had no alternative - no one was offering 'boradband' at a 'low' enough price and also the flexibility of wireless.

Viva La Revolución...

As already stated in this thread, there is a "soft cap" of 10GB on the 128k package, 20GB on the 256k package and 40GB on the 512k package. If you go over this limit by quite a large amount, the help desk will phone you and politely ask you to refrain from doing so. If you do it again, they will strongly recommend that you upgrade to a higher package.

I never thought I would be able to go anywhere near the 20GB limit (I'm on the 256k package, clearly) but since they did maintenence on the Woodmead tower speeds have been what one would expect of a 256k product. I have had BitTorrents going effectively 24/7 at a steady 20 - 30 k/sec. In any case, I racked up 47GB and then 42GB traffic in successive months. Needless to say, I got that polite phone call. I have kept my traffic in check now, but only because I've downloaded what I wanted already! :D

"Props" to Sentech though for improving the speed in the last two months... or is it only me that's experiencing better speeds?

I agree though, that either Sentech should now drop their prices, or move everyone up a package level (soz to the 512k people!) with the better prices that ADSL now offers.

Two things that MyWireless still has going for it though:
1) Large "cap" compared to measely 3GB offered by Telkom and iBurst;
2) If you have coverage, you can get connected almost instantly. No waiting for 6 months to have a Telkom line installed.

However, check out the cost effectiveness of a 30GB Axxess account linked with either a 192k or 384k ADSL line. Nice!

I'm still happy with my 256k MW though... for now. :D

true sentech speed has improved in the last two months, b/c i never breached my cap before april although i didn't change my usage pattern.

but the latest improvements only brought the service up to standard, b/c it wasn't before. So i'm not giving them too much credit.

Also i've read on this forum that sentech would only have about 1800 subscriber currently, so it can't be that heavy usage is overloading their network (if it isn't capable of handling 1800 users downloading like crazy than how would they ever expect to handle a large number of subscribers?)

lastly, the ADSL cap doesn't apply to local(national) traffic (or so i've heard), so 3 gig might actually get you quite far.

So, i still think sentech is no longer competitive, if not taking many people's aversion of telkom into account.
