Improving Credit Score

Weren't you going to get married and leave the country because the ANC failed you?

Yes get a credit card and don't use more than 30% of the credit limit when making debt, or even better, use the credit card monthly and clear it monthly. The longer you keep the credit card (or any account) the better. You don't need to make any debt that charges interest.

Install ClearScore and it will show you how you can improve your credit score.

Other accounts also help, such as Foschini group card. First couple of months is interest free. So can make use of that as well.

Basically you want to show and keep a footprint of good credit history.

Oh I'm still going, been delayed due to Corona but this (my credit score) is needed by a counterparty to a business venture some friends and I are considering!

I knew it was going to be a special post when I read this: "I am the only child of a retired company director and she and I share her luxury home"

I have NEVER read a better way of saying "I live with my mom still". That's class. That's private school education right there.
That's a very uncharitable thing to say and that's what shows our class distinction not my private school education.

Would you suggest I leave my 81 year old mother alone? She's still in quite good health, why should she go into a retirement home? More importantly if I am to inherit this house, (one of the bigger units on a highly sought out country estate) in a few years, and I have more than enough privacy (mom keeps the ground floor and the first floor is mine), why would I want to live anywhere else?

What is this business venture?

Why with these friends?

You bring the money I assume, what do they bring to the table?

You have a business plan?

I can't talk about this venture due to a NDA.

Because it's a pet project of one of my oldest friends.

The credit score is being requested by a counterparty to this venture as part of their due diligence.

Foshini is just not my style.

this is exactly the reason I have a credit card. Buy your groceries every month with it and pay it off immediately when the bill is generated.
But when I was buying my house, they did say I dont have a good credit score because I dont have a repayment history of big amounts over months. I think what they meant was I don't pay enough interest to banks
Thanks for the idea and being able to relate but I'm uncomfortable with the whole idea of eating on credit!

Remember the very important life lesson:

Don't do business with family and friends.

Make sure all agreements is in contracts (with lawyers handling this part), not verbally.

No, Foschini Group.

home, @homelivingspace, American Swiss, Charles and Keith, Collette, Donna, DueSouth, Exact, Fabiani, Foschini, G-Star, Hi, Markham, sportscene, Sterns, The FIX, Totalsports and TFG Insurance
Except for Totalsports (and then only if Cape Union doesn't have what I want) I don't shop in any of the stores you've named that I recognise. Why shop in American Swiss for example when Browns has such better customer service?

So you looking to improve your credit score. But you do not want anything that can improve your credit score.

Goodluck.

I come from money (sorry, if that sounds boastful) but we tend to already know this advice.

I'm planning to leave the country soon and if I can help one of my oldest friends grow his business why not? Personally I'm not in this for the return on investment but rather to support my friend.

You answered your own question. You need a credit record for a credit score.

Get a credit clothing account or credit card, and maintain payments to build up a credit record.
I kinda knew this - you actually need debt to get debt. But I was hoping that my debt to income or asset ratio would boost my score, but this seems to have no effect.

Don’t you rich kids all have private bankers with Investec that can spoon feed you answers to blatantly obvious questions?
Yes, I have a personal banker. But I came here wanting to get more general opinions.

You know, it strikes me theres a term for this sort of problem: the humblebrag. Oh, woe is me, I am too wealthy and have a poor credit record as a result.

Proceeds to:
1) Decline all advice received
2) Throws in even more completely unnecessary phrases like "come from money", "highly sought out country estate" ... we get it.
3) Complains about humour being uncharitable and reverts to a class-base insult

Yeah I think we should answer the only question that wasn't really asked: no, you can't buy a credit record somewhere. Cultivating a good record takes a few years, and as you're leaving South Africa so soon, you're just going to have to disclose your shitty credit history (I'm sure if you explain the detail about the highly sought out country estate all will be forgiven).

You have to prove that you can handle money (and credit) responsibly.
Get a credit card, buy a few items on it, pay the full amount at the end of the month. In 3 months your credit score will be great.

Credit scores also involve more than just credit, they also take into account payment records of things like utility bills, cellphone contracts and insurance. So if I were you, I'd take a short-term insurance contract out on my mobile phone.
