Here is a tip I picked up from a Telkom technician

NOTE: I have not tried it myself
Apparently there are 2 components on the ADSL filter i.e. the box on the wall that you plug your adsl connection into, that cause an excessive error rate thus slowing your speeds down

You open up the box with a star screw driver and cut out the slots labelled 1 and 2. Apparently this improves speeds

Reason I haven't tried it.

1. Telkom take ages to come out and if I bugger it up I don't feel like having no connection

2. I really don't understand what this does, why it works . So I don't want to chop out components that may be required to protect the filte from surges etc.

Would any technical person like to comment on this?
It would be interesting if it would help anything for more speed.

I have a spare fillter ...
And planning to try that.. Will let you guys know if it works or not..

Keep on exploring there must be loop hole some where to get more speed:)

When you talk about improving speed, do you mean *above* the 512/256 K limit? That will help you nothing; the speed is limited from the exchange to the network.

My uplink speed is 6Mbits/sec and my downlink speed 512 Kbits/sec. as I am situated about 1km from the exchange.

Just hopping to get to 512..one day [xx(]

I am around about 100M away from the exchange..it right behind me..no great speed etc..

Even if we can just get the speed they promis it would be acceptable.

OOPS i almost forgot - they did not promise any speeds, did they.

They just want the money.

When I say improve the speeds I'm not referring to improving the 512k/256K speed MAX

I am referring to improving your actual speed you get to your modem. Now a lot of the speed slwo down is due to problems on Telkom'sm networks but apparently this little trick helps to reduce the error rate thus improving speeds significantly.

Hope that makes sence

Just a couple of pointers:
Telkom does not limit your link speed to 512k at the exchange, the average adsl line syncs with the exchange at about 1M so in theory you would be able to achieve higher speeds that 512k IF and only IF the telkom backbone was able to accomodate this (which they are unable to do because of the current over subscription rate) so to answer your question no you will not achieve speeds higher than 512k but only because of the backbone limitation and not for any limitation at the exchange.

Point 2
The filter thingy that you are talking about (and I stand to be corrected here) is a red little goody that looks kinda like a small battery, it was one of the first things that I noticed the telkom tech removing from my box. I have also noticed that the external filters make a difference with regards to link stability (even if your line is not connected via the external filter)

Just thought I would give my 2 cents worth

Thanks Kernel

Useful post, how are your speeds with the filter removed?

Justin

so when you plug your external tel line filter in or when disconnecting it - can it kick your ADSL connection?

also - with the filter plugged - can picking up the handset (going offhook) or receiving a phone call - also kick your ADSL?

I would like to state that this is the exact same "hint" that was given to me by the Telkom techie that came to install my ADSL line, he instructed me on how to open the filter and then remove the two slots presumably because "the filters they give don't actually work if you don't do this". Most of the filters Telkom gives should have somewhere on them text indicating that they are "modified", if not, it's time to crack out that screw driver.

A non-working or lack of filter can reduce performance on the line and can also cause frequent loss of connection, etc.

The speeds are still not great, I think that the whole problem comes down to over subscription and no matter what you do it wont improve until telkom upgrades the bandwidth. I found out the reason for the external filters sorting out the line, apparently all that the filters do apart from lightning protection is put a load on the line hence bringing down the line speed to just above 512K. Try it remove your filters and check the down stream speed, then reconnect the filter and try.

I have posted this before but thought it relevant :

I have no filter in the line to my ADSL modem.
I have a wall box with two outgoing lines -
one outgoing line with no filter directly to the adsl modem
one outgoing line with a filter directly to the phone.

The Telkom techie told me that the filter is only to ensure that the voice phone will work - in fact in worked fine without the filter.

will this improve packet losses..

BTW i have ordered telkom to disconnect my current line and reapplied for my other telephone line.
To see if it will improve my packet loss problem.
They will charge me the standard connection fee of R404.
Any advices welcome!

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the line speed is set when they "activate" your for ADSL usage if you choose say 512k they will activate your line to 512k and if you want 256k and so on. The line filter just filters out the ADSL signals from your modem before they get to your telephone. Try it unplug your line filter SYNC your modem and listen in your phones handpiece your can still hear the tone but it is quite hard to.

If you do not use the filter then any other anologe device you connect to the line may cause you to loose the sync.

I have also found that certain LPU kits (lightning protection units) will also degrade the line speed.

i think there must a way to do so....

i forgot how i did it.
my cap is 3 gb.
i manage to use 26 gb download and upload all together
without paying any extra.

Well I have had first hand experience the more filters you have on the line the slower your connection but it just depends on the resistance/distance fron the Exchange. They tested mine and said it was fine ?? I opened the filter and am not sure Which components to remove ?? anyone have any ideas ?? [}:)][8D]

Go Go Go

You should NOT be plugging your ADSL line into the filter, merely every telephone on the line (that's what the filter is for) that serves to reduce the chance of your ADSL disconnecting when the phone is picked up. There are two tabs (marked 1 and 2) that you should remove from the filter (if you have an older filter, but most new ones from Telkom come with these tabs already removed), apparently this is because the original "tabbed" versions weren't as good at filtering out the noise as these new "tabless" versions. They won't improve your speeds beyond the 512K assigned by Telkom, but will give you better speeds due to line noise, etc.
