In 5 Years, PC-BSD will Surpass Linux says KDE Developer

Slashdot posted an interesting story earlier this week. Luke Wolf, a key KDE developer, made the bold prediction that FreeBSD will surpass Linux in the next five years.

[Think sexy KDE logo]

On his blog, Wolf points out that Linux distros haven’t changed much over the past ten years and have failed to gain market share. He goes on to praise PC-BSD for its rapid development cycle, focus on desktop features, integration with FreeNAS, and power-user features, leading to his belief in the potential of FreeBSD and PC-BSD. He then contines:

“PC-BSD's offering is only going to become stronger as time goes on, while I fear Linux desktop distros in 5 years will be much the same as they are now. “

In fact, there are already signs that BSD is moving to be a dominant force on the operating system playing field. FreeBSD is making headway into corporate mainstream acceptance. Several prominent companies run or base their software products on BSD, including WhatsApp, Netflix, Sony (Playstation 4), and Apple (OS X).

It seems that it’s only a matter of time before FreeBSD and PC-BSD are embraced by a more mainstream audience.

Nothing against BSD but I can't see this happening, not in 5yrs anyway.

Tried some bsd not too long ago and either ssh or the network stack was dog slow compared to linux.

What qualifies this guy to make sweeping statements about the success of any OS over any other? Simply his observations and his opinion? The fact he is a KDE developer doesn't mean a lot.

Maybe this is why a KDE developer is punting BSD. KDE sucks when it comes to networking so putting it on top of BSD gives him an alibi :)

Slightly more seriously, he seems to take a self-centered view of things. Part of his core argument is the Distributions are not interested in the DE side of things, rather leaving that to other people. This is not the case. Red Hat is the major sponsor of the Gnome project for example. It seems that he has a problem with a lack of corporate sponsors for his own specific work.

I actually considered BSD for a while but that damned logo means hell no, literally for some.

While manual installation of other desktops such as Xfce and GNOME was technically possible, none of these were supported and major functionality was lost when not using PC-BSD's special build of KDE SC.[15] GNOME is offered, including Xfce, LXDE and other Desktop Environments, starting with PC-BSD 9.0.

... thankfully it seems we'll still have a choice of DE when PC-BSD takes over the desktop :p

I had a lunatic Christian I worked for once get really upset with me because of that logo. He accused me of intentionally trying to bring evil to his office after he asked me to install bsd. I was so confused.
