In-demand IT skills in SA

Great time to be an engineer with experience :-)
 
IMHO there are plenty of those skills but not BEE and that creates the shortage.

More should be done to develop BEE candidates or lift BEE on skills shortage categories.

Demand for "skills" is one thing, but competency a whole new ball game.

No point in having "skills" and not being competent, its even more pointless in having skills and competency, but the supporting structure doesn't.
 
Dumbest thing I ever did:
Thinking I shouldn't do electrical or mechanical engineering because I came from a non-technical school, in a town where there was another strong technical school nearby.

Hey, it was intimidating mmmkay, you try to explain to someone why you have a strange attraction to the physiological working and components involved in making up a pigeon Butthole/Cloaca, but you would also love to truly understand the technical underpinnings of that circuit board you just ripped from a fan in the garage...before Dad gets home and donners you until you lie still for a week :)
Ended up "settling" for B.Sc. I.T.
Wrong move.

Then....
Getting out of B.Sc. I.T. and settling into programming/software as if it was inevitable, yet I've always been more of a technical/config/architecture person (you know, 'cause "Dev" is apparently better than I.T. specialist).... :rolleyes:

Could've been worse though, my only true love was Paleontology, and in this economy and country you're better off licking bugsplatter from a homeless man's shoes for a living.
At least you'll get some nutrients by doing that :cry:

Went to a Johnny Klegg show the other day and realised my passion for anthropology. Ahh well, I doubt I would have been allowed to pursue it anyway.

It still burns though doesn't it?... knowing there's something "worthless" out there that you absolutely adore, that isn't worthless, but it is.

I'm a 32 year old man who goes complete and utter ape**** the moment I see anything with a dinosaur on it... mostly because I despise they way they're still being portrayed (while convinced I know better) .... and partly because I want to rip off whatever dino material I see and roll in it while I intricately convey my knowledge of Mesozoic phylogeny to a crowd of people who don't really care just so I have an outlet for **** that I'll never need, yet spent years and years on for no reason at all.

...and no, I didn't even have to Google that.

The thing has illustrations and photos that'll make you weep.

Very special book my sister bought me years ago (thinking any and everything with a "fossil" is the same thing :D).
Can maybe make a plan to get it to you if you want it.

Issued in 1995, just before the internet took over everything, rendering useless my fake tears and tantrums towards grandma (hey, if all else fails... and actually, those tears weren't fake) to buy an expensive R80+ Natural History Museum Book from the U.K. as a special import to C.N.A.

I'm doing dev work but don't believe these "findings".So much works get outsourced (aka cheap labour) and companies want to pay peanuts.. why would there be skills shortage? Or is this shortage on for AA...?
 
Oh man... this thread is going to trigger a new existential crisis for me. Like somewhere you missed that one gravel road turnoff marked by a white painted stone that would have lead to the life that you were born to live. But you missed it because you were distracted for one second by something as stupid as your odometer ticking over to 80085. lol boobs, lol... fml :P

Been fielding calls like this for a while.. though IT related especially for speciality ETL dev I did yrs ago(haha no one wants to do it). It's funny they say telecoms eng when that's not really needed due to contraction in sector.
 
Still, after applying for a number of positions (all of which fall in those categories) it turns out "experience" is not the thing they are after. It's BEE scores. At least I have a good position at the moment, but after testing the market several times the last 3 odd years my experience is that it still doesn't guarantee an experienced person will have it easy finding a job. No wonder you find highly skilled people running their own garden service business, or selling braai wood next to the road...
 
The skills shortage is only rivaled by the shortage of jobs in those areas.

The obvious thing to do is to write software for Paleontology purposes even if its an open source initiative started by yourself. If you really love it you will be surprised by where it takes you.
