Hey,

Do we have a map of all fiber layed in south africa, inland on undersea, cuase telkom says they got alot, but id like to know, what about you?
 
I don't think you will find a comprehensive map of all that is owned by all the various companies. One, they don't want to share that information, it is a trade secret, and two, they are always updating, so a map would be quickly out of date. All I have seen so far is planned routes to be upgraded by eg. Neotel.

I wish there was such a thing, but it would have to be a lot of guesstimation.
 
You will never ever get any local company's cable layouts.

Take a road map of South Africa and follow the lines betwee every town and city plus some obscure mountain peaks and you might be close to Telkom's national layout.

Take a street map of every town and city and imagine an exchange building or roadside remote exchange in every suburb and draw a line between them (twice to ensure redundancy) and you will get some idea of Telkom's local rings.

Don't even bother with their copper network, it's everywhere (except where it gets stolen or some newer suburbs!!).

I agree, but telkom is a public company, so it cant be secrete, and dark fiber shoundnt br, and the cell phone people should say as well, ie the station is fiber and this isnt etc

Yes, but who is going to go to all the trouble of compiling that info into one map, especially when it can change so quickly. A business might only be interested in a certain route or city. All the ISPs want to know is can I connect to so and so data center or feed? They are not concerned with where the cable actually lies.

Your best bet would be to contact Stats SA or the industry watchdogs and commentators and see if they have it. Even then they are going to charge you for that info.

I'd love to see such a map, let me know if you get something! :D

btw, you might want to do a search through the photo section and see what you come up with.

If copper theft is anything to go by, just wait until the syndicates manage to get hold of the damn fibre!!!! :erm: (love that new emoticon :D)
 
I cannot give you a map but I can assure you telkom has a boat load of FO cable across the country from first hand experience.

Their cable routes are all plotted on a GIS system. They also have logical cable diagrams & SDH fiber ring maps broken down on a CBD, regional and national basis.
Their IT department running the internal data network alone has more dark fiber (seperate from the normal infrastructure) than you can dream of.
Everything is on record, you cannot do planning or maintenance without this information.

If you had to look at the cable vault in a telkom exchange you would go :eek:

I don't think there is really a big market for fibre. Copper is easy to sell but trying to sell a long piece of fibre is a different story.
