Didn't pay any VAT, was declared as a gift and treated as such. You are allowed 2 per year up to R1400... No idea where you are getting R500 from?

Found it somewhere but mainly from personal experience. You were very lucky they did not tax you. Next time they'll tax you for sure.

It's "illegal"? I'm thinking there must be a better word otherwise a permit would not have been issued. The goods would have just been confiscated or returned to the UK.

BTW it wasn't just the clothing that required a permit.

The problem wasn't that the goods needed a permit. The problem was the incompetent staff dealing with the permits.

I will not use DHL again.

EMS used to be permit-less land for clothing and such, maybe not meds etc. Also they never asked for importer's code. SAPO people just didn't give a darn about this. Sadly couriers want to be legit by the book, I suppose. So if DHL is efficient at delivery, they will super efficiently claim a permit is needed even for personal use.

You just have to fill the form in correctly... And it needs to be a gift, not a purchase... Not that hard!?

Anyone have a useful contact at Aramex clearance team? So far I have been told various lies that I called them on and then they jump to the next lie.

So far I have been told:

Package stopped by Port Health - turned out to be a lie.
Package selected for physical inspection - turned out to be a lie.
Customs wants R160 to inspect - turned out to be a lie.
I didn't specify the correct COO - turned out to be a lie.
"Waiting for customs" - turned out to be a lie.

How do I know all this? They attach all the Customs EDI messages to your AGS profile. Customs are waiting on them. When I point it out to them on the phone, then they just hang up on me. Tried 7 times so far.

This morning they tell me "customs are slow", I check the latest EDI:

SECTION 91 AGREEMENT REQUIRED. PLEASE REFER TO SC-CO-01-02 EXTERNAL STANDARD OFFENCES AND PENALTIES NOTE 2.2(F) PAGE 3 AND 4 OF 7 ON THE SARS WEBSITE.

So I managed to get Aramex to work up to getting a “Ready for Payment” EDI from customs at 9:15. Then they proceeded to do nothing for the rest of the day. Looking at the EDI trail, customs are pretty quick to respond, like within 20 minutes every time.


The problem is that the Aramex clearance team are amateurs and they keep making mistakes.

This morning I asked them why they didn't make the payment and the reason is that some "supervisor", someone named Katleho, is on leave and he has to sign it off. I don't know how these people even manage to breathe.

I suspect they treat their staff badly and staff are just rebelling.
They are terrible

Seems so, after every query it's "ok will take another 2 - 3 working days". Know any contacts that are not useless?

Another reason Aramex are so useless is because they don't see to have a customs deferment account.
