Have a parcel from grand parents in the UK - sent by DPD but somehow has ended up with Aramex in OR Tambo.

Its been waiting there since 3rd August...

We have contacted Aramex 5 times and the person can only say "its with customs". Aramex have never contacted us... Last time we had a gift parcel from the UK the courier asked for ID numbers and stuff as it was on the way but DPD/Aramex only have the normal customs declaration

What can we do? It seems completely stuck with no one able to do anything...

Aramex are seriously the worst courier company on this earth, i mean literally they're useless.

Aramex Package (not global shopper): 02/09/2021 arrived at OR Tambo for clearance - 27/09/2021 STILL NOT CLEARED - they say its taking Customs officials at OR Tambo long.

DHL Package: 27/09/2021 arrived at OR Tambo for clearance at 08h53 - 27/09/2021 09:55 CLEARED CUSTOMS

Also the DHL package had far more items mixed in it that needed checking.

Its not customs, its not OR Tambo, its the most useless company in the world called ARAMEX.

Last time I'm being forced to use them; especially if there's an update 1pm on a Friday but they just went tsjek-jou-naai 'cause its Friday and could have contacted me during their supposed working hours. So I did write an email to Aremex, but I see they themselves didn't even bother to check the status update I can see from Amazon/Their site and just replied with same old sad story I was being told on Friday before 1pm.

Next round its SSS.

You know a courier company is useless when you get more up to date tracking info from 7track as opposed to the aramex app itself

You're going to pay VAT and duties on everything in that parcel. Have invoices ready for each of those items.

I think duty free allowance is like R500 per person per annum. That's like a box of bubblegum from the UK.

DHL Express all the way, if you can. The best worldwide courier IMO, yes it's more expensive but damn, nobody beats their customer service and quick delivery times. Ordered something from a company in Leeds in the UK last week Thursday, received the package this morning at 9AM, you just can't beat that. ÂŁ20 is not that bad actually for express between UK and Cape Town.

It took DHL more than 20 days to clear a parcel of used clothing my mom sent for the kids. I had to arrange import permits for each and every item in the parcel and DHL threatened me with a R5000 fine for not getting it done quickly enough.

Had to send (very important) docs to the UK recently.

One Postnet quoted only R30 more than another. They said they used to use Aramex but had too many problems with them, so switched to DHL.

The cheaper of the 2 Postnet's still used Aramex, so it was an easy decision.

Glad I knew about Aramex before choosing the wrong Postnet.

Not DHL's fault, you are trying to bring in 'clothes' which is in fact illegal, there is a de facto ban on most second hand items (yes you can throw things at me but that's SARS for you) it's supposed to protect our local industry etc, that's the hold up and issue.

Apart from that DHL is very good, easy to track. When your item arrives at customs DHL will call you and tell you all the details, then send you an email to pay the duties and in 5 seconds its all done and released, should be at your door the next day. UK to SA through customs etc normally takes 3-5 days max!

It's "illegal"? I'm thinking there must be a better word otherwise a permit would not have been issued. The goods would have just been confiscated or returned to the UK.

BTW it wasn't just the clothing that required a permit.

The problem wasn't that the goods needed a permit. The problem was the incompetent staff dealing with the permits.

I will not use DHL again.

Postnet seems like a lucky packet these days, I once sent something through them specifically via the DHL service only to find out that it was sent with Aramex and had a range of issues too.

EDIT: Aramex themselves are a downright dishonest business, happy to lie to your face. Would never use them again.

Seems to me in your case Postnet weren't up-front about which courier they'd be using for you, which is very unfortunate.

As mentioned, in my most recent dealings with the one I chose, they'd given up on Aramex themselves so I had little to be concerned about, as long as DHL delivered which they did.

Just to be clear, my experiences with Aramex were prior to the Postnet mixup hence my not wanting to use the service but yeah Postnet basically did a bait and switch on me.

yeah the illegal part is the "de facto" as in it's a confused area. SARS don't see the difference in one importing a Nike t-shirt from a friend or a company. That's where the permit comes in, you must stipulate everything. A nightmare.

Try import a second hand car! The rules and regulations just to protect our second hand car cartels are a joke. You are not even allowed to sell an imported second hand car for years after it arrives! So you buy a lot, then store them for years, then only are you allowed to do with them as you please. What a joke.

I've imported 8 shipments of audio-related items from Parts Express in Dayton, Ohio and Parts Connexion in Ottawa

Both suppliers use UPS

The US and Canadian side are superb, the staff at Kempton Park in Jhb lazy, lie, make mistakes they never admit to and are quite disinterested in their work

The last shipment took 5 days from Dayton, Ohio and 7 weeks at Kempton Park

I got phone calls asking for my ID. My Customs Number for Import is on the address label which the clerk had not bothered to read

When I got a Pro-Forma invoice, there were 9 DA50 forms charged for. The excuse I got was that the invoice was incorrect. Parts Express denied it. I subsequently found that the clerk who prepared the DA50 had only written the first 6 digits of the Customs Number, instead of all 8. He blamed the incorrect invoice again. By that time I had the shipping invoice and the correct number was on it. That was R1250,00 wasted. UPS refused to waive the fee, no reason given

After a strong complaint to Parts Express, I received a $80.60 refund

Then UPS local office turned up for delivery in Cape Town 3 days after their assigned day and wanted me to pay for storage. Its Covid, the driver said, handing me an invoice for R140,00 which I declined to pay

I use DHL a lot for importing spirits. They are good up to SoutAfrica and then the wheels come of a lot.

But usually the issue is customs, not DHL.
