inconsistent speeds with consistently poor upload speeds

I've got a 10/10 connection with Afrihost and Octotel. Over the last week or so I've noticed that my speeds are erratic. My download speed varies between 10 and 6, and upload speed does not go higher than 4mbps!

Does anyone else have this problem?

Also is afrihost support non-existent over weekends?

Hi,

Sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing. Have you tried to connect directly to the ONT to see if it makes any difference?

I can't connect directly to the ONT as I don't have any devices with Ethernet ports

Which router do you use? Have you tried different wifi channels. I think this is a wifi issue rather than a network or line issue. Could also be a router software or hardware issue.
 
D-LINK DIR-825. It's less than 6 months old. During the day the connectivity is better, which makes me think that the problem does not lie with the router.

How would i use a different wifi channel?

It could be a router issue. I always like to eliminate the router as a possible cause because it's bitten me a couple of times before. Troubleshooting a line and logging a fault with the line provider just to find out that the router is the issue even when the client was connected to the router with an Ethernet cable so when I hear wifi I immediately think router or wifi issue.

How many wifi networks do you pick up if you do a quick search? Remember there could even be other devices like a wireless keyboard and mouse, xbox controller ect also causing interference. The actual router wifi module or software might be faulty hence a direct cable to the ONT would have been ideal to rule out a router issue.

You can change wifi channel settings by logging into the router 192.168.0.1 and going to the wifi option on the pane on the left and look for the advance settings that will allow the channels to be set.

For 2.4Ghz channel 6 and 11 works the best and for 5Ghz channel 36 works the best. You can however play around with them to see if you can find something that works for you.

If it is indeed the line that could be the issue I don't mind reporting the fault but before we do that we would need to get some tests with cable connected directly to the ONT before we can report a line fault.
 
I pick up 20 networks. Currently im using 2.4ghz on channel 11. You aren't giving me any convincing reasons to believe that this is a router issue.

The last time I had a similar issue with another ISP, it was a problem with Octotel.
 
Switching channels makes no difference. Please log a line fault and have Afrihost do what it needs to do to fix the problem.

There is your problem, way too many networks and 2.4Ghz is slow
 
Yeah and at night they are used more, only way you can do a proper test is via a lan cable not difficult or get a USB/Type-C to LAN and test plus get off 2.4Ghz its so old
 
Sometimes you just have to be direct because there is so much bs out there. Due to all that bs unless someone is straight with you don't know if you are being told more bs.

To get close to your line speed you need an ethernet cable.

To get close to your line speed on wifi you need to spend a stupid amount of money on the best mesh wifi routers or accept that you are on wifi and won't get close to your line speed.

I've had speeds slightly above my line speed for the past few months, with wifi. This is a new issue. The problem isn't that I'm uploading at 6mbps rather than 10, it's that uploads are timing out, and the speed I'm getting is below 4mbps.

Over the past few days, since I noticed it, it's been dropping in the evenings, and it's fine during the day.
