Thanks Telkom, reduce ADSL prices, but increase dialup prices (how's that for irrational pricing?)

Was:
Rental - R92.28
Infinitcall - R62.05
Infinitcall cap - R9.85

Now:
Rental - R99.92
Infinitcall - R67.18
Infinitcall cap - R10.65

Numbnuts.

Try a wireless internet connection, fixed cost. I had problems with disconnects and the phone bill used to look frightning - i'm on mywireless 128 & enjoying it:)

Dial-up Benefit:
Still a bargain best uncapped price in SA. You can pull over 5Gb per month for under R400.
or go 128k ISDN2a at a total cost of less than R900pm for over 10Gb.
On the downside - the spec's are for "callmore time" only, but then again some of us do have daytime jobs, so does it really matter?

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated in any way whatsoever with Telkom or any of it's subsidiaries nor have any relatives (that I know of) who are affilliated with them. I just abuse their dial-up and ISDN bandwidth!

Yup! In the long run it's cheaper, especially uncapped!...

It's not surprising, is it?

Garnish a little bit of ADSL to make some clients happy and hike the mainstream services. Excellent bussiness ideas - Telkom draws more clients thanks to their marginally cheaper ADSL prices and rakes in more from daily telephone users.

Sounds like R12bn+ net profit for 2006/7to me.

NoRulez u can get a 20gig soft cap for a fixed R 819 per month including a modem - I'm not advertising for anyone, just think u get a better deal with a wireless connection.

Yeah, I pull about 23gb downloads and about 3gb uploads every months. And its all international :) with isdn2a & infinitcall.

Costs me about R1100-00 pm.

Speed is constant at 15,3 KBps.

Still a good deal imho compared to adsl and the cap.

Only hassle is when the line gets dodgy and you have to reconnect often. The bill can easily rocket to R1400-00pm but hey its still intl. unshaped.

Well just a quick calculation, but the Infinitcall formally known as the R 7,00 call has increased 7% on an Annual basis (7 x 1.07 on a compound calculation) - I would imagine the same goes for the rest.

They say that the greatest trick the Devil pull was to convince people that it did not exist, TelCon on the other hand was to tell people that local calls run at a loss, this might have been true many (many) years ago, when rentals were low and calls only cost 5c - But when Tom Barry (First CEO of Telkom) got the ball rolling, he knew that the Internet was on the way in and focused TelCon's charges and business in this direction, and they have been draining us dry ever since

You don't know if you should laugh or cry when you hear that ICASA want an extra 57 Million to tide them over, when they allow TelCon free range to Roger the country

Let's put the pricewar to bed for once:
(actual extracts from my phonebill and DUMeter logs)
Code:
[U]DATE TIME DURATION NO CALLED TARIFF COST[/U]

5 Jul 06 19:00:31 11:47:51 0860007249 Callmore R8.640

Total Duration: 118 hours 32 minutes 24 seconds
Total Cost: R 51.84 (about R0.43 per hour)
Total Bandwidth: 1.42Gb (about R0.04 per Mb) :D

Now let's see any local ISP top these prices...

It is all fine, but you are forgetting to add all the other costs as well. The additional costs are as follows:
1. Infinitcall subscribtion - R 67
2. Line rental - R99
3. Vat on above and your calls - R25.80
4. ISP for ISDN 128 - R199

Total cost - R 441

My calculation is that it costed more than 30c/MB

As soon as you stop downloading and just serve like me, A 3G contract will be more cost effective and you are not linked to your telephone line at home.

True... other costs not added, but this excersise was to show dial-up costs for one week only. Line rental is for normal phone use too and ISP for ISDN need only be R79 as for dial-up if you don't take the bullsh*t "free" extra e-mail and so-called "free" 5Mb webspace.
For surfing only, I agree that other packages will be sufficient - even the 3Gb cap on ADSL, but try joining an online band and see how quickly mp3 & ogg tracks eat bandwidth!

What's more is that we are still in SA and some of the rural "agter-die-klip" areas don't enjoy the technology available to big city folk!:)
Take care

" Now let's see any local ISP top these prices "

I fail to see what an ISP has to do with it, TelCon are acting like a gate keeper, and one that does not play fair either, if they were playing fair then the Infinitcall should allow you to on as much as you like, because we all know too well that if your call gets dropped that's the end of it. Let's not talk about how we should be getting un-metered local calls in the first place anyway

Being thankful for being ripped off is asking a bit much

No I understand your high usage - try ripping at a lower quality until you are satisfied with the product and then only use high rate MP3's........

I did a speed test last night on GPRS since HSPDA would not connect for the last two days - perhaps the wind is blowing away the HSPDA signal since I live 5 km away from indicated HSPDA coverage. The GPRS speed indicated as 62kbps where my ISDN link only showed 51kbps downlink speed - This makes sence as the 64kbps in ISDN is used for uptraffic as well.

I found the Telkominternet for ISDN better than previous connections - therefor paying R199 per month. I still use the ISDN bonded connection to connect to our company as the company istalled toll-free number (0800.......) but this is not used for browsing any more.

I download in a few coffeeshops where free wireless access is available for their clients. 3 cups of coffee is cheaper than even what you are paying to download or upload large files.
