First I knew of this was when they sent me a bill for 150 bucks for two of my domain names.

That's a 50% increase which appears to have snuck under the radar.

What happened?

Did Minister Pule's boyfriend just spot a lucrative revenue stream or something?

R75 for a .co.za domain name means that it's almost the same price as a dot com domain name, which sure can't be justified?

While the 25 buck increase won't really impact much for your average corporation, it probably take it out of the reach of any downtrodden township kid with an idea for escaping the poverty trap and a dream in his heart.

They're phasing out the "direct to uniform" thing because they actually have EPP registrars now. so no more emailing in a ticket/waiting 24 hours and all that crap.

Move your **** to a registrar, much easier. I suggest http://elitehost.co.za, they're quite clued up

This is because the Uniforum system is too efficient, yes?

No built-in incompetence factor to stuff the system up?

I suppose it was really too good to be true, wasn't it?

You apply for a domain name on line, and, provided you have your ducks in a row, your domain can be up and running within minutes.

Clearly an unfavourable state of affairs. :(

If you can't afford a R25 increase, how on earth can you afford the internet connectivity, PC and creative software that you'll need to make millions off your domain?

I think I can probably afford the Drupal license fee.

However, whether I can afford the 25 buck increase is not really relevant, as I stated in my OP.

What's the cost of a dot com registration? Does the dot coza offer better value?

I'm aware that there are instances where a dot coza will better suit some situations. I'm just wondering why we rate ourselves higher than the States.

I'm also concerned that there seems to be an idea that the registration process should be placed in the hands of individuals rather than be fully automated as it is now, meaning that registrations that currently go through immediately at any time day or night, will probably have to wait for office hours where they can be stuffed up by an office full of semi-literates.

You're comparing apples and oranges here.

The cost of an item (any items) generally directly relates to how much effort, resources, human intervention, etc is needed to offer said item.
A .zw or .bz extension cost about R600 last time I checked.
A .com can be had @ $8.25 (average) or upto $15, depending on who you buy it from, and if you want to deal with an overseas company to provide the service and after sales support. That doesn't mean South Africa is rater "higher or lower" than the USA. And I don't even understand how you came to this conclusion.

The legacy co.za registrar followed a manual, and error prone route of doing thing. Domain registrations generally took upto 72hours to complete and domain transfers could take 4 days to complete - if everything was done 100% correct and the system wasn't overloaded.

Now we can register a domain within a matter of minutes. Transfers are equally quick.
The new system is much more automated, provided you use a registrar who has automation in place.
It's also far more secure than the legacy system.

But seriously though, if you can't afford the R25 increase, use a cheap registrar.
