NEW DELHI, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- India's state telecom majors plan to slash broadband tariffs by 50 percent in an effort to increase market penetration.
The Hindu Times said Friday that MTNL and BSNL are taking the bold step in order to pump some life into the government's goal of a major increase in broadband subscriptions by the end of the year.
Cost has been blamed for the relatively lukewarm increase in subscriptions, and some smaller private companies have reported a jump in new customers after they lowered their prices, the newspaper said.
Regulators have also called for unbundling of last-mile services in order to boost competition at the retail level.
