An Indonesian woman has been found in the belly of a giant python after the swollen snake was captured near where she vanished while tending her vegetable garden, police said on Saturday.

The body of 54-year-old Wa Tiba was found on Friday when villagers cut open the seven-metre (23-foot) python which was found bloated in the village of Persiapan Lawela on the island of Muna, offshore of Sulawesi.

"Residents were suspicious the snake swallowed the victim, so they killed it, then carried it out of the garden," said local police chief Hamka, who like many Indonesians has only one name.

Its sad really. Youre looking for your mom and she was eaten by a snake. I wouldnt imagine how to even deal with that.

I read that as an indonesian woman swallowing a giant python :o

Yikes, a 7 meter snake. Probably first suffocated the lady before swallowing her, rough way to exit the cognitive zone.

Nooo it most likely tricked her into voluntarily climbing into its open mouth.

tragic but shirt happens - my issue is they killed the snake for no apparent reason other than to confirm that it's the missing women :(

I guess not getting the body back to the family is reason enough.

You know an alligator was just killed in Florida to see if it killed a lady, That must really irk you.

This is very sad, but when a python swallows its prey its normally not done in a blink of an eye. So no one heard this woman scream for help.

I was discussing this with someone yesterday, and it seems more closure for the family to have the body to bury or cremate. I was also on the opinion why kill the python as its natural for its survival to eat.

It's always a pity to see snakes killed but I can understand why the family wanted to be sure of the woman's fate. Reminds me of a young Australian child being taken by a salt water crocodile a few years back. The parents saw it happen and expressly asked that the reptile not be killed.

Here's a case of a snake getting its own back after it was killed:
