Indoor IP/WiFi Camera Recommendations

<subs/>

Total n00b here, I know how to drive Linux and Docker but have never touched IP cameras. Moving to my first house soon (yay!), and I like the idea of Zoneminder (open source ftw).

Is there any good resource for a total idiot?

(I'd be looking to do some indoor and some outdoor, both for security and for baby-minding.)

Saw a couple fo videos on Youtube that take you through setting it up etc. It looked like quite a lot of work so i decided to go for Blue Iris instead.

Goodluck with the move and setting up the cams

What are you running blue iris on? The recommended specs look fairly advanced.

I'm still using motioneye as a plugin on HassIO and it works fairly well for me.

I will be setting that up later today cameras only arrive today. I repurposed an old Dell desktopand upgraded parts so now it'll have:
  • i7-4790
  • 12Gb Ram
  • 120Gb SSD boot drive
  • 1TB spinning drive
I will test on that and see if it works ok - if not then december will have to be spent looking for something better. I will have between 4 and 6 cameras running. Needless to say i've been looking into how to best optimise BI on older hardware

Ok, which lovelace card are you using to display the streams? You should use the Picture Entity card, the Picture Elements card is buggy and has high latency. Here's sample code I used for the Picture Entity card.

type: picture-entity
entity: camera.cam1
camera_image: camera.cam1
camera_view: live
show_name: false
show_state: false

In my case, there's literally less than a second of latency and this is running through BI - not even directly to the camera.

I am using the picture-entity lovelace card so it may be my setup at home as the RPi is connected via WiFi as is the laptop I am working on. Another issue I have discovered is that the Sonoff camera feed, although it is delayed works OK on the laptop but doesn't work at all on my iPhone through HA.

Are you using MotionEye to pull in the feed from IP cameras in HA?
Yes, I do have a issue which seems to be chrome related showing the live stream in HA, but that camera is not running now so I can't check.

My other one is a mjpeg stream which I stream directly into HA, I just use motioneye for recording on movement detection.
