infinite call ?

If they want to phase out the service then surely they can?

What I don't understand is, if they really do want to phase out the service, why don't they just stop it altogether, across the board? Or do they think there'd be too big a backlash?

It's still on their price list on their site.

No they can't. It's arguably discrimination. However, that opinion is based on the Telecoms Act 1996, as for what the ECA says I don't know.

It's only discrimination if they're blatantly offering the service to certain people while withholding it to others.

I suppose it could be argued that it's discriminatory that they're continuing to offer the service to existing subscribers, and not offering it to potential new subscribers.

But, they could easily argue that they're simply phasing out the service slowly by stopping it's expansion first, and that the people who do manage to subscribe to it, are simply fortunate because the system isn't foolproof or whatever.

Are they obligated to provide this infiti-call service in the Telecoms Act? If not, of course they can phase out the service, just as the corner cafe is able to stock whatever they want. In the UK, certain newsagents only stock certain newspapers based on the owner's political views. Whether it's in their best interests, is another matter.

@ Gunny, check the time and duration of the calls.

calls starting and ending during callmore time (19h00-07h00) are charged at R8.64, but if the call is not ended by the 7am deadline, telkom charges R8.64 plus R?.?? per minute for the portion of the call that falls outside call-more time.

eg.

Date.....Time......Duration of call...Number....Tariff...Cost
Jun 06 19:18:21 11:39 hours 021xxxxxxx Callmore R8.64
Jun 06 19:22:19 12:21 hours 021xxxxxxx Std & CM R23.28

note: "duration of call" is usually printed as 11:39:56. i have added the word "hours" to make it easier to understand my example.
:)

Infinitcall has not been cancelled.

I REPEAT INFINITCALL HAS NOT BEEN CANCELLED!

I have it on one of my isdn lines.I checked my current bill and its still available. Its also still available on the current price lists. Please do not start unnecessary rumours and create panic or give the b@startds ideas!. BTW this seems to be a sort of annual panic topic. I admit I am worried about the new price list myself.

Anyways...when have you ever gotten a straight answer from the Telskommel help desk :( . Most of them prolly have a teeny little brochure of the current packages they're tryin to flog and have most no idea of what services (of the 300 odd services) they offer. Lastly, Telskommel over billing is as South African as boerewors is.

I tend to agree with BTech, i.e. that this is an individual case and that Telkom have not dropped it altogether. But if anyone else comes across a similar incident, please do post here, because we never know how widespread such things are.

I had infinite call in the beginning then changed to anothe option then to Closer 2...I was not happy with Closer 2 and changed back to Infinite call...at the minimum fee...As for Infinite call...It could be that when I first registered they still have a record of me being on Infinite call, that I was able to change back...(Just an idea ) As a new user I'm not sure...but I don't think that it does not exist all together otherwise they would have told me that I couldn't have it...
As for closer 2 you have to be with Telkom ISP, otherwise they charge you standard rates...I've been there...

Had the same experience about 18 months ago. Received a shocking R3251 phonebill vs my normal R650-R800 bill.
Upon closer inspection of the detailed account, I found that the capping wasn't applied for 3 weekends! I'm online daily from 7pm-7am and full weekends (Friday 7pm to Monday 7am) - so imagine the implication if, like in this case, the capping wasn't applied!
After a lengthy e-mail and personal fight with the high brass in their Ivory Towers, I eventually got a R2468 credit passed on my account with a mailbox full of apologies.
Haven't had any problems since.
