Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling says there's always a way to shatter the glass ceiling...

Speaking exclusively with NowGamer, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling confessed that there's plenty of life left in the current crop of consoles and that the company is in no hurry to leap to a new generation of technology.
"I think you can always take a console further." says Bowling "It’s all about hitting that glass ceiling but then finding ways to break through it. When we finished Call Of Duty 4, when we were done with it, we thought we’d hit that glass ceiling, but then, as you can see with Modern Warfare 2, we've found ways around it. We introduced texture streaming which allows you to do this and that opens up more doors, so we may not know it yet, but there is definitely much more you could do [with the current generation]."

Looks like XBox 360 has quite a bit more life in it. These are comments I like to hear: developers stating there is a lot more they can personally do with their own code on their own side, rather than blaming console limitations.

Kudos to Infinity Ward and here's hoping to so good games coming up ahead!

Wow, they discovered texture streaming. Many years after other developers :p
Texture streaming has been around for years. GTA San Andreas did it on the PS2, and it streamed both textures and models. It's a common feature now.

But he's right that there is plenty of life left in the current consoles, I really don't think a new generation would be a success any time soon. They don't feel dated in the same way the PS2 and original Xbox did in their last years. But maybe that's because the PC hasn't been getting the attention it should and showing how much better it can be.

Damn straight we dont need next gen yet, if you want super graphics get a pc, if you want excellent graphics, get a console (not a wii :p)

Does that include the PS3 TIM? I saw no reference in particuklar to the eXbox360?

Biased much? Then this OP can be seen in perpective.

Was this texture streaming not used in particular by Guerrilla Games in KZ2?
Eish the advantages of BluRay!

Nobody claimed it was a new idea, the trick was to find out how to do it successfully on the XBox 360. Now with that out the way its back to development :D

Just remember in two years time these console might begin to acquire the dated look and feel you speak of, so the time is ripe to begin next gen development - I think a good 6 year gap between consoles is acceptable.

This is thread is as silly as the previous...think before this was even posted numerous companies that released AAA titles already confirmed working on their next titles in the series for current gen...Naughty Dog and Guerilla come to mind, and UC2 and KZ2 were 2 of the best looking games of 2009...the only studio i've heard saying "this is it" is Epic for Gears....

MS released new SDK's this year with more lenient memory use...Sony's edge and MS's new X-engine going to see optimisation for next year releases...

*I'm boggled that people are finding engine and code optimisations as something NEW*

@Tim : I recall you saying if they (ND) have to optimise the engine, then they code poorly on their current game, now you are applauding IW for optimising...need to think first and then post, you contradict yourself like every 2nd day...major fail...

At 350 bucks a game, sure is no reason to move on yet.

Good point...Absolutely shooting yourself in the foot saying "we going to wait for next gen..." or "need" next gen....another release in the next 24 months is likely...R350 for PC, maybe....over R600 for console, and over 2 million pre-orfers in the US alone ...insane !

Key word in that, CONSOLES, They Just don't give a fsck for PC

I've heard that the sales are so poor on PC in comparison to consoles that they don't really give a ...they'd prefer nudging all PC gamers onto the consoles where it's 1 less platform to deliver on and evading the synonmous piracy platform...and obviously that sale would translate to a higher profit margin, paying almost double for the same game..even if they lose half of the pc camp and the other 1/2 buys the console version...bottomline looks the same...

exactly, The basterd have no honer, At least I know Valve will never drop the PC market :)
And About the piracy, where was the first leak on.... Console: XBOX I hope they make a huhe loss on xbox too

Looks like IW thinks they don't need customers either.

Hmmm, looks like Lemon is sprouting his usual nonsense, making up facts as he goes along. Sigh, some people can't be teach-ed.

So what if the leak was on the XBox 360 first, what does it have to do with the price of tea in China. Piracy is going to occur. The moment the disc is released it'll be up on a torrent website.

:D

no man, he said that "there's plenty of life left in the current crop of consoles" because consoles have a glass ceiling

PC's don't have that.

he was simply saying that they can still find ways to make games playable with good graphics on say, an xbox360.

Well every game has its target platform, and sometimes the PC loses out.

Yes, PCs can constantly have the best tech, but that is also a nightmare for developers to ensure the games work on every combination of hardware. It is definitely easier to develop for a console because you are very limited in the hardware you have to work with.

But on the flip side of the coin: you are very limited in the hardware you have to work with! :D This means being innovative, making concessions and putting more time into code optimisation.

So it can really go either way, each have their pros and cons, I guess :/

when the console is launched it has a pro - solid hardware, and ONLY that hardware to code for.

when the console gets older, it gets more and more to the Con side - yes, only 1 system to code for, but an out dated system.

Sorry, I did actually have reliable sources..will try to find them.. The PC's initial delay was attributed to not having pirated copies made available wtih gameplay video's on the net prior to retail launch.

The 360 version is not only available but downloaded like crazy by owners of hacked boxes, I still think they will buy the retail copy so sales won't be affected even by a single %, they d/l'ng it now to play the SP campaign and jump into MP (on retail copy) as soon as the servers are up on release day !

So a nice big huge EFF YEW to you Tim, want to question my posts, just ask for a source, don't say that they are nonsense, obviously i read more than a write, you should try it....

Two last things...'Teach-ed' ? you mean thought, right ?
and finally, only pirated if it's PC, Wii or X-BOX ;)

A new system also has a con, new architecture, harder to code. Older the system, the more refined the code. Games work better, added functionality, better support, etc.

maybe it is time to stop fussing about the car and take the ****ing thing for a spin, that is what it was made for...
