Information Systems & Technology or Computer Science

Really depends on you and what you want to do - both have their uses. I would take both until 3rd year.

As per thread title, which would you recommend as a major & why.

Are you more into hardcore problem-solving type coding or more into business and commercial app development and project management?

That's pretty much CS vs IS in a nutshell.

If you were to go the information systems route at UNISA you would skip a lot of mathematics, but if you were to go the Computer Science route, you are going to do some mathematics as well. So if you are not so strong Mathematically, I would recommend going the Information Systems route. you are still going to do some Computer Science modules, like the programming, but you are going to skip more hardcore Computer Science modules, like Theoretical Computer Science, Formal Logic, and Artificial Intelligence (if you were going to study at UNISA).

I am gonna dual major its just depends on which stream either ISTN or CS.
@Ghost02 I remeber that you were at UKZN or still are not sure, what would you recommend?

I'm not really a strong maths guy but I don't mind holding off till 1st semster to see if I can handle the maths since both streams have the same modules in the 1st semister.

Well if you dual major, then it doesnt matter since you will be doing both!

My advice - take both and decide which you want to do in Honours year after 2 years. So, by your third year, you will know which you like better.

If you going to UKZN and you going to dual major you can either choose between CS and ISTN together (IS stream) or a dual CS major (CS stream), I recommend the IS stream as you said you not that great at maths, the IS stream still does maths up to 2nd year first semester and its the same maths as the CS stream does but they do 1 or 2 math and stats modules after that. The comp for the 2 streams is basically the same, you will still do AI and theory of computation in the IS stream but the ISTN modules will also teach you about project management, systems development, database design and some programming for enterprises. The nice thing about the IS stream is that it is still hardcore CS so you won't miss out on much and you will be fully equipped to do honours in CS or ISTN.

If possible, do Info Systems with the coding modules. I hate coding so I never did it. Also IS people earn more initially.
