While following one of the links in a thread from a few days ago, I stumbled across this interesting article. What do you think?

https://danielmiessler.com/blog/build-successful-infosec-career/

Is this seriously what it would take to follow a networking/security career? I would imagine having all of this would mean you are the bees-knees, but I think its a bit excessive?

If that is the case, suppose I gotta re-look at what I wanna do ha ha. My heart isn't in netwokring ans security THAT much.

Pretty much.. Except don't agree with the have a presence part. But from education to lab etc is pretty much it. Most guys have worked in networking or one area then pivot into security. Without playing around or enough experience you're not going to stumble into a security career.

That is a negative for bees/knees.. You get to play, that's all, doesn't make you respected or good at it.

****. Well my idea is to carry on with networking, I still have alot to learn and then filter over into the security side. Also start learning some linux to add to it as most platforms, Mikrotik, Cisco etc are linux based so would make sense.

TLDR

The people at my company went on a Mcafee course and now think that they are the fk'n Gods of this company.

:crylaugh: yeah that happens. After I did both my MTCNA and MTCRE courses I felt even more lost. I honestly don't feel I should have them if you look at skills point of view. Still need to grasp a few things. Never the less, onwards and upwards.

I will never run around like I am a boss, especially after those courses, I will use them to help others, that's about it.

Keep in mind that infosec is a MASSIVE topic. IT in general is a massive topic, nobody can be expected to know everything about everything. The same applies to infosec.

However, you do need to understand the basics, before you start specialising. Understand IP networking, learn about network protocols such as TCP/UDP and be able to explain the differences (and when to choose one over the other), understand some higher level protocols such as HTTP (e.g. play with Wireshark until you understand what all the fields mean, for a variety of protocols), etc.

Then start playing with technology that interests you. Learn what you can about how the tech works at a low level. The better your understanding of the tech, the better you will be at finding/understanding vulnerabilities in it.

I'm happy to talk further if you are still interested.

Thank you for that. Most definitely interested. I need to decide wtf to move forward with.

I see you in Randburg, I am too. Can meet up some time?

LOLZ a lot, quite epic, but quite common. Just wait and see when they do a (ooooh! aaah!) CEH course...

LOLZ even more...
