Cape Town - The country will need its entire skills base for the government's R300bn infrastructure programme, Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel said on Tuesday.

Asked about affirmative action, he told the Cape Town Press Club the government would make an "active attempt" to bring back South Africans with skills to take part in the programme.

"The infrastructure programme is so vast that we will need the entire skills base of society and more," he said.

"We will be making an active attempt to bring back South Africans with skills to take part in this programme."

Patel said South African engineers were sought after "around the world".

"I visited a Gulf state recently and I asked my counterpart how we could deepen economic relations. He said above all don't remove your engineers."

The government is looking at its immigration policies to attract the level of skills it needs.

He said the government wants to form deeper partnerships with universities to make sure the skills base is built up.

"In an expanding economy where you have a shortage, we need to bring in more and we need to bring them in quickly."

Lol, maybe you should look at your local policies & crime that encourage them to leave before looking at your immigration policies.

More sweet talk. The idiots keep fooling themselves. Racist "Affirmative Action" policies, have transformed the whole thing into a mess. Just the other day the department of race relations (or whatever they call themselves), were trumpetting about how much the living standard has improved among "all our people". The worst part is, uneducated people believe that siht. They must make their minds up: do they want "colonialists" in South Africa or not. What was the name of that white chick who was not allowed to study medicine because she was . . . white? WTF All 3 my kids want to go to Australia as soon as they finish school. It will take a lot more from the ANC's side to change their minds :(

Its interesting, I have a couple of engineer friends who all have applied for jobs in the Gov sector and cannot get the jobs. All have over 20 years experience.

The Gov recruitment strategy is not working.

Directly with government or through contractors? I hardly ever see any engineering projects that are run by the government.

I think through Portnet.

Well there seems to be a broken telephone thing going on.

High level gov wants to recruit or say they do. But it does not seem to happen.

There is always a disconnect between policy and implementation in government. They claim to need the skills but in reality director generals/municipal mayors/managers just employ their unqualified pals or give the contracts to their friends.

They probably won't be joining you because:
1) they are probably scared they won't get paid after the job
2) they are probably scared they will become a crime statistic
3) they probably won't accept any back hands, fraudulent deals and will speak about it
4) your goverment helped chase them away now you want them back to suit your short-term goals
5) you think it's a promise here a promise there and all is forgiven and forgotten - I don't think so.
6) they probably will not be able to work with the appies you appoint because of crime, corruption, strikes etc etc etc etc
Ask JM to assist if there are any bridges to be built - thats 2 x the job creation because it needs to be rebuilt afterwards.
